Pours from the bottle with a deep brown, nearly black color, and is topped by a creamy, cream-colored head. The aroma is largely a dark, sweet combination of caramel and molasses sweetness, with some bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is a bit more complex, with characteristics of roasted, almost smoky malts, brown sugar, and some peppery, herbal hops, but there is also some lingering bitterness that seems almost metallic, and a noticeable hit of alcohol. The fine carbonation does a nice job of not masking this varied flavor profile, and the body isnít too heavy. Overall, this beer has a lot of what youíd expect from a solid imperial stout, but it doesnít have anything extra to make it exceptional.

Bottle: Jet black, light-mocha head showing decent retention on top; little to no lacing. Aroma is a nice hybrid of creamy roastiness, mild campfire sweetness, burnt & toasted barley, sweet chocolates, mild char, woodsy tones... Heavy, robust. Great balance between the heavy roast & the offsetting sweet elements. Silky, smooth, creamy mouth feel. Roasted barley, earthy hops, mild campefire-like smokiness, black licorice, a hint of dates... Lots of complexity. Notes reminiscent of coffee join towards the back-end, mild cream & sugar sweetness with just a touch of roast. Molasses, faint syrup. Again, great balance with both noticeable amounts of roastiness & sweetness. Lingering ashy char. Delicious stout.

The body has a dark brown/black color that is nearly opaque. On top there is a Light tan head of modest size (about one finger) that fades down to just a small ring of bubbles that makes some slick lacing. The aroma has lots of roasted malty grain and a heavy vodka like alcohol presence. It has a big sweet malt flavor up front with lots of roasted grain, roasted malt and roasted coffee notes. This is surrounded by a heavy boozy alcohol presence and tempered by solid hop bitterness. Also there is some mild odd fruitiness in there as well. The finish really hits you with sweet boozy alcohol that hangs on the tongue and warms the palate. The texture is full, smooth and slick with mild carbonation.

Bottle from Beernut. Pours black with tan head. Aroma of bitter chocolate and coffee. Taste is smooth, roasted, but not overpowering coffee or chocolate, very balanced. A little bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Tasty stout.

Super sweet up front: overly ripened dark fruits mixed with orange, caramel, and just plain old sugar. Booze starts to emerge midway, followed by coffee, dark chocolate, and hints of cherry. Finish is an awesome mix of dark roast coffee, pine, and dark fruit sweetness. Once warmed, it the sweetest beer Iíve ever put in my mouth. It was like a coffee you accidentally put 1 or 2 too many sugar packets into. But at the same time, after each sweet assault up front, the flavors glided into either complimentary or contrasting flavors. Each aftertaste shifted its focus as well. I canít help but be impressed by the range of sensations this one puts you through.

Not a horrible imperial stout, but it was definitely lacking a little in taste (also a little watery) compared to what I like.

2013 vintage, best before 03/16/14. 12 oz bottle into a tulip. Pours a pitch black with a massive mocha foam and sticky lacing. Nose is on the roastier side with char, chocolate, coffee and some light hops. Taste is more subdued with cocoa powder, lightly smoked malts, bitter coffee and some lingering bitterness. Medium mouth feel with a little heat. Maybe itís the year or so on it, but this is drinking really well. Right up there with the best shelf stouts.

chinchill (1602) - South Carolina, USA - APR 19, 2014
12 oz bottled dated "enjoy by" 5-5-2012 (rated Jan. 2012 - from notes) Pours nearly black. Clear, not cloudy. Small, short-lived tan head. Very aromatic, with a strong dark chocolate component. The chocolate remains in the flavor, but takes a backseat to the coffee. Both of these, as well as a spicy hop note, are secondary to a rich dark malt base. O: excellent, if not up to world class renditions such as Founders Breakfast Stout.
