In the 1950s, the Bulut family of Great Lakes Brewery came to Canada from Europe across the Atlantic. For our 25th Anniversay, weve decided to cross back over in search of traditional beer styles and, of course, we are adding our own professive touch that weve become known for. We look forward to bringing you worldly beer styles throughout this hear and hope youll join us on the journey as we celebrate our 25th anniversay Russian Imperial stouts were originall brewed in England for the Russian Imperial Court for Czarina Catherine the Great in the 18th century. For the final release in our 25th Anniversay series weve been inspired by the south to add a contemporary touch to our stout. Weve amassed a number of freshly emptied Kentucky Bourban barrels in which weve aged the beer for 3 months. This has enhanced the flavour profile of roasted malts, rich dark chocolate and coffee with a finish of sweet Bourban. This release is best suited to aging and can be cellared for up to 3 years.

The beer pours a solid black colour with a thin tan ring for a head. The aroma was a disappointment, weak hints of roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, and bourbon. The mouthfeel was full bodied with mild carbonation. The flavour was roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and vanilla. Quite good, but not great. The barrels could have lended more to the flavour.

Draught at Bar Hop for Dark Water Series 2013. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small lasting creamy light-brown head. Aroma: The barrel-aged qualities hit you first with wood, vanilla, bourbon and the like, followed by roasted malt and some chocolate. The flavour, which follows the aroma, is big and has a big finish. Said finish is bitter and a tad boozy -- get a bit boozier the more you drink it. Medium bodied. The barrel-ageing is not overdone and is quite nice, its not an easy-drinking beer but its very flavourful and pleasant.

Shared with JoeMcPhee, thanks bruv. Black colour with a thin chocolate coloured lace which clings to the glass. Roasted malt, peat and chocolate aroma. Vanilla and chocolate flavour. Smooth on the palette. Only a hint of the alcohol for the strength. Very tasty and easy drinking imperial. Delicious.

Bottle from the LCBO - shared with gethinbeer. Deep black pour with a thick tan head. Fades relatively quickly. The aroma is a little bit muted for the style. Soft milk chocolate and leather along with a soft vanilla and caramel middle malt character. An intense sticky mouthfeel and a little bit of sweet coffee character. Unctuous palate and a lot of sticky sweet malt character. There is a bit of tootsie roll chocolate character. Loads of vanilla and a touch of bourbon as well. Some nice spiciness but its incredibly smooth. Tasty beer.

2013-03-09. Black body with a modest tan head. 3++ Aroma is surprisingly mild, alcohol grows as you go. Dark malt, bourbon. 7+ Flavour is moderately bourbony, dark malt, lingering bourbon has a moderate vanilla character and muted wood notes that grow. Smooth average to medium bodied palate. surprisingly mild, lighter than expected. A bit less assertive than I would have thought but that leads to increased drinkability. Pretty nice stuff. I was planning to age the bottles I have at home but this is drinking pretty smoothly right now. Bottle shared by Wilco

My 1500th Ontario rating! Nice!

Brown bubble head that stays a few mins or less and then is completely gone like it was not there. Completly black so a really good looking beer. Little carbination at bottom I can see. Smell isthe barrel, the burbon and chocolate. Taste is chocolate, the barrel, the burbon and a bit spicy/smokey. 1st sip tatsed like it was cut with cola. So medium bodied but feels like it should be heaviy and more stronger in flavours. Its allright but a little let down by it.

750ml bottle from the LCBO. Bought this because of the RB newsletter saying this was an up and coming beer...wasnt expecting much however once it warmed up to room temperature it opened up and what a surprise. Dark dark brown with a nice mocha head that fades to a small ring around the glass. Espresso, bittersweet chocolate mixed with some chocolate pudding, rye bread dipped in aged balsamic vinegar, some booze but not as bourbon forward as some beers I quite enjoy but have to say very well balanced. Full body (if you drink this too cold it will seem thin - let it warm up in a glass to room temperature or at least close to it) with mild carbonation, coats the palate, somewhat bitter, bit of celery, some oak, vanilla and booze; becomes a little dry with a viscous covering in your mouth. This beer makes me want to go back and try the rest of the 25th anniversary beers - and also makes me glad I bought 6 of these and to be honest may go back and get more even at $15 a pop. Highly recommend that people in Ontario go and buy this beer.

Lots of dark chocolate and some coffee. Pours black with some mocha head, no lacing. Smoked malt aroma. Also some booze in there. Bitter finish. Low carbonation (cask). Thick consistency. On tap at volos - not sure I would pay the $14 for a bottle of this, but its decent.

750 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours an opaque virtually black with lasting, rich brown head. Aroma is full of barrell with lots of dark chocolate, roasty coffee and some warm alcohol. Flavour is rich chocolatey malt, espresso, bourbon, vanilla and some hints of brown sugar. Mouthfeel is fairly silky; medium-full body. Impressive in every respect.

Pours black with an initial dark tan head. Little lacing. Nose is vanilla with maybe some espresso and bitter chocolate. Aromas are bitter chocolate, roasted malt, espresso, vanilla . Tastes are heavy sweet with medium bitterness to the finish. Oily in the mouth with light-medium carbonation. Alcohol is present, but well integrated. Top notch.
