In the 1950’s, the Bulut family of Great Lakes Brewery came to Canada from Europe across the Atlantic. For our 25th Anniversay, we’ve decided to cross back over in search of traditional beer styles and, of course, we are adding our own professive touch that we’ve become known for. We look forward to bringing you worldly beer styles throughout this hear and hope you’ll join us on the journey as we celebrate our 25th anniversay

Russian Imperial stouts were originall brewed in England for the Russian Imperial Court for Czarina Catherine the Great in the 18th century. For the final release in our 25th Anniversay series we’ve been inspired by the south to add a contemporary touch to our stout. We’ve amassed a number of freshly emptied Kentucky Bourban barrels in which we’ve aged the beer for 3 months. This has enhanced the flavour profile of roasted malts, rich dark chocolate and coffee with a finish of sweet Bourban. This release is best suited to aging and can be cellared for up to 3 years.

750 ml bottle shared by jprime. Black with a tan head. A masterfully crafted imperial stout aged perfectly in a bourbon barrel. The barrel compliments the base beer so well it’s hard to imagine the two apart. Really good BA impy!

Bottle from Marcus, Thanks! Pours a pitch black with a thick brown head. Aroma of a mix of bitter and milk chocolate, a bit of vanilla, oak, llittle booze, faint coffee notes. Taste of roasted malts, coffee, milk chocolate, oak, light bitterness. Full bodied mouthfeel and low to medium carbonation. Fairly drinkanle for the style. Really surprised by this one.

On draft at WVRST. Pours an opaque black with nearly no head. Smell is roasted malt, vanilla, and bourbon. Palate is heavy bodied with not a whole lot of carbonation. Taste is sweet at first the bitter for a short while before relaxing into a long sweet and bitter aftertaste. Pretty decent RIS.

Sweet baby Jesus this is good. The best imperial stout from Canada I think I may have ever had. Pours your typical motor oil with a short lived mocha coloured head. The aroma is dark roast coffee, chocolate, dark cherries, vanilla, oak, bourbon, awesome. The flavour delivers everything the nose promises, a good underlying molasses sweetness underlies all the dark coffee and chocolate goodness with cherries, vanilla and oak showing up near the end. Bourbon becomes very evident in the finish. A little lighter in the mouth feel department than I was anticipating, but it works somehow. A fantastically executed beer. Wish I grabbed a few more to age.

750 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a snifter. Pours deep black with a moderate tan head that mostly remains and leaves a few bubbles of lace. On the nose, there are big notes of cocoa, oak and bourbon, along with roasted malts, molasses, vanilla and subtle smoke. The flavour is moderately sweet throughout with big notes of molasses, cocoa and vanilla. Towards the end, roasted malts become more prominent, along with bourbon barrel and subtle smokiness. The finish is long and roasty with bourbon barrel notes. On the palate, it is full in body with a smooth, creamy texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a great bourbon barrel-aged Russian imperial stout; the bourbon barrel adds a nice degree of complexity, without being overly dominant. Roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla and oak develop nicely as it sits on the palate. 2013-03-28

Aroma is full of bourbon with crystallized fruits, brown sugar, cherry, field berries and raisins. Magnificent nose, complex, with bourbon all over and several notes of fruit and sugar. Color is black, opaque, with a thick dense and creamy brown head. Medium lasting and great lacing. Attack is very warming with alcohol sticking out strongly but not aggressively. Molasses, cherry and field berry notes are mixing well with alcohol making the mouth feel very round and thick. Roast bitterness is adding to strength as finish and lasts very long. Body is full, texture creamy and round. We can also feel coffee, milk chocolate and caramel making their way trough the flavor palette. A very warming and complex RIS. It’s just missing a little something with it’s balance sugar / bitterness to raise it up at the level of outstanding.

The beer pours a solid black colour with a thin tan ring for a head. The aroma was a disappointment, weak hints of roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, and bourbon. The mouthfeel was full bodied with mild carbonation. The flavour was roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and vanilla. Quite good, but not great. The barrels could have lended more to the flavour.

Draught at Bar Hop for ’Dark Water Series 2013’. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small lasting creamy light-brown head. Aroma: The barrel-aged qualities hit you first with wood, vanilla, bourbon and the like, followed by roasted malt and some chocolate. The flavour, which follows the aroma, is big and has a big finish. Said finish is bitter and a tad boozy -- get a bit boozier the more you drink it. Medium bodied. The barrel-ageing is not overdone and is quite nice, it’s not an easy-drinking beer but it’s very flavourful and pleasant.

Shared with JoeMcPhee, thanks bruv. Black colour with a thin chocolate coloured lace which clings to the glass. Roasted malt, peat and chocolate aroma. Vanilla and chocolate flavour. Smooth on the palette. Only a hint of the alcohol for the strength. Very tasty and easy drinking imperial. Delicious.

Bottle from the LCBO - shared with gethinbeer. Deep black pour with a thick tan head. Fades relatively quickly. The aroma is a little bit muted for the style. Soft milk chocolate and leather along with a soft vanilla and caramel middle malt character. An intense sticky mouthfeel and a little bit of sweet coffee character. Unctuous palate and a lot of sticky sweet malt character. There is a bit of tootsie roll chocolate character. Loads of vanilla and a touch of bourbon as well. Some nice spiciness but it’s incredibly smooth. Tasty beer.
