On tap at the Arrow and Loon.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a finger of tan head.

Aroma: Grapefruit, hops

Flavours: Grapefruit, hops, moca and some dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Thicker and creamy with lots of carbonation.

Overall: Nice well executed black IPA. The 10% abv is well hidden amid lots of smoothness with citrus, moca and chocolate flavours.

Pours clear brown with two fat fingers of pillowy light tan head, good retention and excellent lacing. (4/5) Nose is light citrus, pine resin, grassy, moderate dark malt and mild coffee. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, immediate strong bitter. (7/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, dry bitter and warming finish. (4/5) Whattya mean, “Imperial Black IPA” isn’t a BJCP style? (Nor, I guess, is Black IPA, at least not formally, yet.) Bit of a beast - huge bitterness and big (but not overwhelming) booziness battle it out on the tongue, along with a little onion aftertaste. Interesting, if not perfectly balanced - a bit of an odd duck. (15/20)

Always late to the party, has everyone had this but me? Can from the brewery. Pours a inky black with only a sheeting of off-white head. Nose heavy with, what is that?, summit hops? Heavy resin, onions nose. Taste is similarly heavy with the hops. Big resins, bitterness with heavy toasted malts, some sweetness. Whatever that hops is, it isn’t my favourite. (It’s a favourite of Bellwoods) I suspect when I look at my list of followees they’re rate it better than me. But to each his own.

Can: Poured a deep black color ale with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops with light roasted malt notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by roasted malt notes with quite bit of green citrusy hops with medium bitterness level. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed but hops profile could be even more dominant.

Hoppy aroma with chocolate and coffee notes. Opaque, near-black colour. Citrus front with espresso finish; mild bitterness sustained. Medium body and carbonation. Pretty nice.

Trade from Sammy- An assertive nose of resin, roasted malts and suggestions of bitter coffee. A handsome espresso hued foamy head sits atop an almost black pour providing abuntant lacing. The palate is overall bitter - malt driven up front giving way to a hoppy finish and aftertaste. Burnt malts, black coffee, while resin flavors round out the taste. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, how can you not like a a beer with humorous art work and labeling?

473ml can. Pours nearly black with a one finger, tan head that sticks around forever and laces well. Aroma has well blended notes of roasted malts, bitter chocolate, citrus, pine, and resin. Yum. Taste is a strong bitter with notes of caramel, pine, resin, milk and bitter chocolate, and a drawn out bitter aftertaste. Very mild alcohol taste. Well hidden. Medium-full body with a medium carbonation. Creamy texture in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall lots of flavour. Caramel, pine, resin, milk and bitter chocolate. Would get again.
