It’s been said that “Canada is the only country in the world that knows how to live without an identity.” This beer doesn’t help much with that crisis. From the fiercely irresponsible stereotypical image on the front of the can to the distinctly American style of the beer inside it – we’ve really made a mess of things. What have we done? Sorry.

Poured from 473mL can. Slightly hazy golden yellow with white head. Citrusy grapefruit hops, mild resin, with a bit of skunk and malt.

(473mL can from LCBO) Poured cool, a slightly hazy medium gold with a rocky white head that faded quickly. Aroma citrus-dominated, some grapefruit in particular, faint malt. Flavour again hoppy, a little malty sweetness at first but strongly grapefruit pith, citrus, quenching and a little acidic. Moderate bitterness coming in, finishes tinny and dry. Body fairly lightweight, high soda-pop carbonation, Not too complex but a very refreshing summer pale ale.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2014 Can’t believe this is my first time trying this. Pours honey brown with a soft cap that gives up its ghost quickly but offers serious lacing as the beer makes its way down the glass. Aroma promises hops & while they don’t pop as much as I’d want they balance well with the bitterness. I prefer their more creative offerings but this is a solid pale ale that delivers what you’d want.

Why the low scores? This stuff is pretty good, certainly better than 3.2. Pours golden honey with a short lived white cap. The aroma is a pleasant surprise, I generally find us Canadians to be having a hard time with that hoppy, resinous, grapefruit, citrus smell we all love, but it seems Great Lakes has managed to pull it off, with a nice malty baseline to boot (and yes, buttery movie theatre popcorn diacetyl.)(dieuduciel makes the best hop forward beer in canada I think). The flavour pretty much delivers whats promised with the aroma, citrusy, hop goodness, not over the top, not to hot, not to cold, just right, with a bit of a balancing act with the malts, sort of tastes like malt extract, but it manages to do the job moderately well. I see what people are saying about Diacetyl (if you don’t know what that is go here: http://beerme.com/diacetyl.php) And yeah, it’s a bit of a buzz kill. But 3.2......REALLY?

Can shared by Tom10101, thanks! A text book American Pale Ale, with good floral hops, citrus and some malt. Refreshing and well balanced.

Can, fresh from Porterhouse Dublin. Hazy gold pour, nice tight white head. Great orange, grapefruit and pine needle nose - bit of light tropical fruit in there too. Taste is so good: juicy citrus and a touch of mango, with plenty of pine needle and (not so sticky) resin. Nice bit of very light white bread dough and light caramel. Great bitter hit - all citrus and pine driven. Really crisp. This is top gear, go Canada.

473ml can. A hazy golden body, medium white head with poor retention but plenty of lacing. Aroma of stone fruits and honey, orange peel and hay. Taste of grapefruit, mango and a touch of pine. Light!
