COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s been said that “Canada is the only country in the world that knows how to live without an identity.” This beer doesn’t help much with that crisis. From the fiercely irresponsible stereotypical image on the front of the can to the distinctly American style of the beer inside it – we’ve really made a mess of things. What have we done? Sorry.

Inviting aroma of citrus hops, some good malt too, dark amber, pours a firm finger of off-white head, leaving lots of pretty lace. Flavour is a good citrus kick from those hops, decent level of malt, orange/grapefruit, caramel and butterscotch notes. Medium bodied, very well balanced, good mouthfeel, creamy smooth, a fine bitterness. Terrific! Rated during the Opening Ceremonies for the XXI Winter Olympics, Let’s go Canada!

Canette. Merci Patrick. 6/10

Poured light amber with a small, frothy off white head. Aroma of sweet malt and moderate citrus. Medium body, flavour is medium sweet, lightly bitter. Bitter finish.

Can - Sweet tropical fruit and grapefruit. Hazy gold with a white head. Grapefruit, pithy and a bit of tropical fruit. Nice balanced bitter finish. Better than expected.

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2011 On tap at volo. The aroma coming off this cask was incredible. Amazing juicy citrucy aromas. Every citrus fruit imaginable is in here somehwere. Good solid malting keeping the mouthfeel and bitterness in check and light enough to make this a solid drinking beer. Refreshing, and exploding with flavor. A really great beer.

650ml from the lcbo. Amber pour with a fluffy white head. I’m seeing alot of people talking about a buttery diacetyl aroma and flavor but I’m not getting any. I guess I got lucky. A great citrus aroma with some juicy hops and a slight caramel maltiness. Quite bitter in the finish but the hops are really nice with some great citrus notes. I’m really quite impressed.

Can - 473ml. Hazy, light amber body with an average white foamy /creamy head. Fresh hoppy aroma with citrusy, grapefruit hints. Its sharp hoppy taste carries grapefruit and herbal notes. Ends with a decent bitter finish. Good stuff.

Bottle, LCBO Waterloo. Nice orange/copper pour, murky white head. Aroma has some nice hops in there, very citrus, but also a good heap of butter. Oh oh. Weird balancing act going on in taste - you have some intense bitterness from citrus hops, but it appears to be all from dry hopping. There is a weird sweetness to the malt profile and to top it off (ha, top it off, a pun!) there is butter. There should not be butter. This beer was just released and stored in a cool lowly lit LCBO (one that actually takes care of its beers). I really like what Great Lakes is doing in terms of creativity, but this is about 3 in a row now I’ve run it to that have been all butter. Disappointing, I bought another one, will re-rate if needed.

Bomber from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear amber with a modest off-white head. Aroma: Lots of bread crust, biscuit, toast malt, some orange-pine hops, a slightly odd sweet honey/sugar aroma, slightly peppery, grassy, floral and soapy. Palate: Medium+ body, moderately aggressive carbonation, prickly. Flav.: An odd citrusy/eucalyptus note, some honey, lemon halls for sure, still some biscuit and bread crust in the malts, lighter earthy pine; dry with forceful bitterness and a kinda lacklustre light malt finish with lingering bitterness.

Comes up a bit short, but a good effort.
