3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Another bomber from Great Lakes Brewing, and a Canadian tribute for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Pours a rich golden colour with an off-white head that is fluffy, with decent retention and dry bubbly lacing. Great grain malt scent (I recognize the same malt found in Steam Whistle and some other pils) at first, and then, the hop appears. An awesome pairing of both. Silky smooth mouthfeel with a little stick in the end. Wicked bitterness the whole way which rules my mouth. Nice grain aftertaste with the hop always present. I really enjoy this brew and will buy some more for the Olympics. A superb pale ale. Great Lakes seems to be impressing more and more, every time they release a new offering.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 21, 2012 Purchased at the LCBO. Pours a dark copper colour with a white head tat was about a finger and a half. Clumps of lacing. Aroma is a little pine and citrus as well. Taste is bitter same as aroma pine and citrus like a bitter grapefruit. Nice.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Can from jerc, thanks Jeremy. Pours clear orange, thick white head, gorgeous lacing. Nose is big citrus, fresh rank hop cones, and earthy creaminess. Flavours are nettly hops, with loads of citrus and spice, nice balance, well-rounded. A quality brew from Ontario, blow me over.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Smells like floral hops with some grapefruit, even grape. Colour is blond hazy, good lacing. Good head retention. Taste has more hops and fruitiness. Faint but not unpleasant sourness. This beer is wonderful - a great, original pale ale, so much more than the standard hops and malt standard. Among the better APAs I’ve tasted. On cask at Castro’s Lounge.

This is a wonderful find.. Picked up randomly at lcbo.. Similar to Brooklyn.. Strong hop flavour with only mild bitterness.. Lingering and crisp aftertaste good for any occasion.

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2012 Tall can. Golden amber with white frothy head, consistent lacing. Strong beautiful aroma of centennials: slightly green, lots of citrus. Medium-bodied. Smooth balance of caramel malt against strong hops. Long, lovely, dry bitter finish. Flying Monkeys Smashbomb IPA had been my favourite Ontario beer until this -- although today was a stressful day and maybe this beer was just in the right place (my hand) at the right time (immediately). *UPDATE: Was not quite as good the next few times. Smashbomb still represents for me the Ontario high water mark in hoppy pale ales.

REALLY enjoyed this one. Maybe simplistic, but looked and tasted like a wheatbeer crossed with the hoppy IPA. Malty and spicy at first, but then just enough tartness to clean your palate. Not too heavy and not bloaty aftertaste.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at C’est What - GLB announced this one as "Canuck Pale Ale" but it seems that was a name that was still in development, as the official GLB tap handle clearly read "Crazy Canuck Pale Ale". Cuhhhh-raaaayyy-zeeee! Anyway, the beer came a clear light bronze colour with a brilliant white head that lasted throughout most of the glass and left some intricate lacing. Really beautiful fresh Cascade aroma, fruity, citrusy, piney. Loverly, though a bit one-dimensional. As long as that dimension is hops, though, s’all good. Flavour much the same, those Cascades are definitely on show, but there’s a hint of malt to make it a touch more balanced. Nice, long bitter finish. CCPA reminds me a bit of a slightly less malty Hop Addict from County Durham. Well done Great Lakes - this one is up there with the Pumpkin as my favourite of their offerings. REALLY looking forward to the bottles.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
650mL bomber from the likbo. Pours a nice copperish gold, paler than I was expecting. Large, rocky white froth. Aroma is mild but nice, some good hops upfront with non-typical Ontario malts backing them up. The flavour I actually find quite pleasing, lots of hoppyness upfront with some bitterness, descending into some mild but tasty biscuity toffee malt notes. Very tasty, reminds me of Sgt. Major’s when it’s on. Some minor butter like others have mentioned but it’s honestly so subtle and drowned out by the good aspects I can hardly see how it could be considered a major flaw. This is probably my favourite GL brew I’ve had to date and I will definitely purchase more, because it’s so tasty but also to support a micro brewer while f***ing Molson’s has its usual stiffling strangle hold on the Olympics. Very good effort, I must have a particularly good bottle since I don’t completely comprehend the mediocre over-all rating, but to each their own as the saying goes. Not really a west-coast pale ale so complaints against the advertising are legitimate. On it’s own it’s a solid beer so I hope they just adjust the blurb on what it’s ’supposed’ to be.
