Jan Primus (160), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada May 23, 2008 Skeptically, I purchased a bottle from the LC last fall...ended up grabbing another 24 after sampling the first. This pured out a bright, transparent orange with ample white head...aroma was more spice than pumpkin. Flavourwise, I was worried that it would be too much pumpkin or spice but they did a great job here. The pumpkin was not overdone but easily detected, even by non-beer geeks...and just the right amount of spice/herb to balance things out. This was so drinkable that it become my session beer for about a month, last fall.
Lookin forward to the next batch. JesseM (407), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Oct 26, 2007 650ml bomber. Pours a nice somewhat hazy orange colour, with a large white, fluffy head. The aromas are very sweet, lots of pumpkin and spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, ect. Flavours are somewhat complex, very malty the whole way through, bready and creamy texture which I love and would expect from a really good dortmunder/helles, but there’s also traces of pumpkin and nutmeg. No pumpkin pie flavours here, nor much ginger. It has a really nice spicy finish that’s quite tasty, followed by a sweet, almost fruity aftertaste (I can almost taste banana?). This is only the second pumpkin ale I’ve ever had, and it’s completely different from the first, but they’re both great in their own ways. This one definitely puts a lot more emphasis on the pumpkin and spicy aspects of the brew, with a very solid bready malt backbone. Top notch stuff, I swear pumpkin ales are one of the absolute best things about this time of the year! VeloVampire (400), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 17, 2007 Updated: Sep 29, 2008650 ml bottle - pours a clear amber, actually quite similar to the Orange Peel Ale, with a good sized white head that lingers for awhile and leaves some nice lace. Soft aromas of spice and and a caramel malt undertone. The flavours are herbal, earthy and spices like nutmeg and clove. There’s a really nice biscuity quality in there as well. Delicate carbonation. This is a subtle, beautifully balanced pumpkin ale, and perfect for the season. I bought four bottles of this at the LCBO today, and I think I may be going back for more....This is Great Lakes best seasonal yet, and each one seems to get a bit better.....good job guys. Also, loooove the bottle. beergut111 (210), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 23, 2007 On tap at Victory. Very nice. Mild spicy pumpkin taste with a nice amount of hops. Gimmie more! MrManning (1448), London, Ontario, Canada Oct 25, 2007 Bottle LCBO tasting- Pours transparent orange with an off white cap of froth. Lots of spices in the aroma. Ginger and cinnamon pack the first punch, and nutmeg is the runner up. There’s some bready doughy aromas as well. Mild burnt malts. No real pumpkin aroma, but that’s ok, it’s nice. Very delicate spiced flavour, ginger and corriander, nutmeg, cinnamon with some mild rosemary and bitter hops. Mild tongue tingle in the finish, lots of spices and bitterness.
Good.
