It’s been said that a great sorcerer with a single magical vanilla bean can infuse the intense depth of flavour and aroma that is found in this ale.
Unfortunately, we are hideously short of such wizards at Great Lakes so instead we simply used 1001 vanilla beans.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2014 RE-RATE - mmediate vanilla flavors that blend in well and a hint of richness from either the bourbon or more likely the dark toffeeish malts. No unbalanced astringency // ORIG RATE. Wish there were points for a silly title! Cask at Only. Great dark brown look with dark tan head, faint nose of dark fruit, taste is surprisingly bitter - thin hop bite. Struggling to detect toffee, chocolate... is there any vanilla here? All the hinted-at mellow richness seems clobbered and defeated by the weird almost metallic astringency. Excessively bitter hop palate - why? = 3.2

Pours a dark brown colour with copper highlights, a beige creamy head and some light lace. Roasted malt aromas with coffee notes, chocolate, dark fruits and the soft vanilla. Not getting much of the bourbon but a lot of the same in the taste. A nice mix between the malted barley and the vanilla bean.

Dark brown with ruby edges, thin off-white head with some light lacing. The aroma is of chocolate, some coffee and vanilla beans. The flavour is moderately sweet, a fair amount of chocolate and vanilla, light roast. Slightly sweet mouthfeel, medium/light body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, sweet. A fair amount of vanilla in this but not getting much in the line of bourbon. Pretty good still.

Cask at barhop. Very dark, small beige head. The aroma is subtle, a bit of smoke. The taste is exploding, it’s bacon, smoke, malt. Just beautiful.

Bouteille 660ml, gracieuseté de msjpearson, Thanks Mike! Couleur noire opaque, mousse moka crémeuse laissant une légère dentelle. Arôme de vanille, chocolat, guimauve, biscuit Graham. Goût de malt torréfié, vanille, café, chocolat, légère acidité. Carbonatation moyenne, corps moyen-faible.

(Project X version: 6.5% ABV and 30IBU) Appearance: opaque brown-black with one finger of rocky tan head, excellent retention and lacing. (5/5) Aroma: vanilla bean, dark chocolate and coffee, bourbon. (8/10) Taste: moderately strong sweet, moderately strong bitter. (7/10) Palate: full body, moderate-low carbonation, moderate lingering bitter and warming finish. (4/5) Surprisingly bombastic for a relatively restrained ABV - it swaggers like a double-digit but is fairly successfully in punching above its weight. I say “fairly”, because the finish ultimately gets a bit unbalanced towards the bitter once the sweetness subsides, and you’re able to taste it since the taste buds haven’t been pummelled into submission by the booziness. Still, very much worth a try, and the lower ABV means you won’t be limited to just one - whether of this, or something else! (16/20)

Big bottle from the brewery labeled on a project X neck tag. (As per usual.) Pours as back as Lord Voldemort soul (...ah the bit that’s stuck in that locket I guess) with a little more head that q-ball L.V. has hair. A sweet nose of vanilla, and chocolate, malts that come off burn and a little dusty. The taste is a decent hit of roasted malts, a little dust and ash. (What is the malt out there that does that. It keeps coming up.) Fairly sweet with a strong presents of that vanilla, the bourbon hiding for me. Overall sweeter than I was hoping for, and not the bourbon flavour either.

Poured from 473mL can. Black with tan head. Lots of vanilla with a dark chocolate and coffee backing. Bourbon aging is almost completely hidden.

Pours very dark brown with a mocha head. The vanilla bean aromas waft off of this one. Quite lovely. The palate has the vanilla bean, coupled to something akin to cherry cola. This beer isn’t an in-your-face beer, but it’s subtle nuances need to be slowly ruminated on, and doing that will reveal that this really is quite complex, not to mention delicious.

Pours a very dark opaque brown with a decent sized light brown head that leaves good lace. Aroma is vanilla, roast malt, bourbon and rich toffee/coffee/chocolate mixture. Flavour is roasted malts, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coffee, chocolate, mild bitterness, moderate sweetness and almost lightly burnt malts.

Thanks to cfrancis for this one... I’m a sucker for vanilla! Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy brown head that dissipates and leaves good lacing on the glass. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate and coca. Taste is vanilla, roasted malts, light toast and caramel, bourbon and a nice bitterness from the roasted malts and a light bozziness from the bourbon... Excellent complexity!
