3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JAN 26, 2015 On tap at Wvrst. Good balanced ale with mild hops and smooth but slight bitterness.
Jan 26 2015 - second rating. I forgot I tried this before and resisted buying it because it was an English Ale. Probably was good but wouldn’t be my first choice of style - I would expect that bready, caramel taste from that style. The aroma and taste are both pleasantly surprising from the American hops here. Glad I bought it again

Appearance is a beautiful pillowy head atop a muddy brown body; nice cloudy effect in the light though. Aroma is that usual Great Lakes piney hop character, but is missing the refreshing citrus liveliness of their others; some caramel, toast, slight dirty-feet off note. Taste is mild, mainly an earthy dryness; also some grain, nuts, touch of dairy, floral notes. Mouthfeel is nice and creamy. It’s fine, but it lacks the character of their pale ales.

Out of the can poured a beautiful light brown with a thick, creamy, persistent off-white head. Very eye catching! I got aromas of moderate herbal hops, against a caramel malt backbone, with orange peel, and something I perceived as slightly tinny/metallic. On the palate moderately-high carbonation, with caramel malt playing the main role up-front but giving way to lingering hop bitterness on the finish. Lighter body and more carbonated than I expected - not at all Pompous, or maybe that’s the point!

I do enjoy some of this brewers other beers, but this one fell short. No doubt it has good ingredients, but the hops are just too overpowering. That is all you can taste and smell. Bad aftertaste. Next to no carbonation. Will not purchase again.

Great Lakes Pompous Ass English Ale 4.2%
This was a random find at an LCBO in Ottawa. Amber orange color with beige head.
The aroma is malty wafers, orange and vanilla. Medium to full bodied with a semi-dry mouthfeel. The taste is peaches, cream, orange, malt, wafers. A good solid English beer they surpasses the label.

A hazy copper body with a scarce light brown head. Hoppy nose with notes of herbs, earth and caramel. Taste is quite dry with a mildly bitter finish. Lively carbonation and somewhat thin palate. Feels more american than english to me but it is quite nice for such a light beer.

Nitro at BarHop. Murky brown with thick nitro beige head. Lots of tea, some wood, sugar and roasted grains, faint orange. Light sweet and bitter. Light bodied with low carbonation. Better than a lot of actual English ones while still being true to the style. Nice.

Xan sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks troubles. Amber. Nice aroma of malt, toast, a bit of fruitiness, and nice earthy and floral hops. Flavor has sweetish malt, slightly toasty and biscuity, with a bitterish floral hops finsh. Light to medium-bodied. Decent.
