3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
650 ml Project X bottle from brewery. Pours a sligthly hazy reddish brown with modest-sized off-white head. Aroma is toffee, sweet vanilla and wood. Flavour has lightly toasted toffee and a nice mix of sweet vanilla and woodiness. Warming booziness in finish and some modest bitterness. I really enjoyed this one.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep amber brown pour. The aroma is kind of awesome. Rich sweet malt and a lot of chewy tobacco character. A little bit of chewy hoppiness and some soft tobaccoish sweetness.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 19, 2011 2011-07-18. Only took brief notes. Less oak, much more rounded. Wow! Still prominent oak in the nose, but sweet malts come out a lot more. Much more malt and sugar than the draft sample, more restrained oak in the flavour allows it to be more of an accent, and less the dominant flavour. With a bit of time to mellow out the oak this has become rather nice. 7/4/8/4/15 - 3.8 Bottle at the brewery during Bartowel Anniversary Brewday
2011-03-11. Ruby tinged brown body, modest beige head. 3+ Aroma is woody and alcoholic at first, sweet sugary malt under currents. Flavour is similarly wood prominent, sweet malt base, light toast and caramel accents, light balancing bitterness. 6+ Smooth average plus palate. Decent, but my lasting impression is that Iíd like to let the base beer shine with less wood. Not sure if this is the same base beer as their Triple Trouble but I quite liked that one. 7/4/7/3/14 - 3.5 Great Lakes Tap Takeover at Volo, Toronto

Unicorn ale 2010 oak aged. Bottle at volo. Brown, warm , scant cap. Distinct barley wine aroma, with a pear heavy aroma with bing cherry. The finish is nicely hopped, with healthy toasty dark bread crust. Not as fruity as it smells.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at Volo. Pours a very deep ruby with a small diminishing fizzy off-white head. Aroma is fruity and malty along with some wood and alcohol. Flavour is fruity along with sweet caramel malt, light hops, wood and hops -- dangerously easy to drink for a Barley Wine. Medium to full bodied. Really good, this is a lovely beer!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A big barleywine, boozy, hoppy, bourbon. A bit above average mouthfeel. This was good for being young. However, a sipper in terms of drinkability. Dark colour.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2012 [3642-20110312] Tap. Perfumey toffee aroma. Slightly hazy, dark red brown body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Boozy toasted toffee malt flavour. Medium-full body. Nice but nearly overwhelmingly sweet and boozy. (7/3/7+/3/15) 3.5

[4933B-20121113] 650mL bottle. Toasted wet leaves and citrusy orange peel hops aroma. Hazy, dark orange body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head. Bitter orange peel hops continues in the flavour with a lightly toasted grainy base. Medium body is fairly bitter. Quite tasty despite possibly being on the older side. (7/3+/8/4/15) 3.7

Pour deep ruby/copper creamy beige head. Aroma oak, vanilla, sweet, hints of booze, toffee, wood, caramel. Taste tad boozy, vanilla, oak, wood, caramel, toffee, mild hopping. MF full body nice light carb. Solid brew a little boozy would love to see how it mellows.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample at GLB Volo Tasting. Poured a reddish brown with thin cream head. Aroma is very boozy with some hints of wood and a prominent sweetness. Flavour is, as the aroma suggested, boozy with wood evident, sweet caramel malt and some hops. This is a big BW but one that will either shine with aging or fall further afield. Itís good but raw.
