Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Pours hazy orange small light head not a lot of carbonation bubbles. Smells fruity hoppy and orange like. Taste is creamy and fruity and also a slight caramel taste. Slightly bitter and dry warm finish, I do not taste the alcohol but do feel it, nice beer.

Incredible double ipa. Smells is dank and marijuana esque. Tastes like grapefruit juice with an alcohol punch. Hoppy finish as well. Pours a wonderful copper color with a thin white head. Crushable for 9% alcohol. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft @ GLBC CLE airport. Pours a deep golden to amber in color with minimal head, but nice lacing. Aroma of citrus, tropical fruit and malt. Medium body with appropriate carbonation. Taste is nice balance of malty sweetness, hop bitterness and a subtle citrus flavor. This is a very drinkable DIPA, with the alcohol well hidden.

Best by date of 05/03/15. This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy yellow to orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light stringy lacing roaming around the glass. The smell had a sweet citrus with a bitter citrus rind and an underscore of caramel malt to balance. The taste was bitter and sweet not necessarily combined but delicate in its composure to lead into the aftertaste to leave a dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body. Sessionable - slightly and the alcohol wasn’t felt too much. Bittersweet harshness rolled over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good DIPA that I could have again.

Bottle, thanks Colin! Clear dark orange, bubbly white head. Strong sweet aroma with a bit boatload of citrusy hops. Taste - huge orange and citrus over a sweet medium malty body. Just a lovely orange zest like finish. Body is medium but feels like on the tongue. Alcohol is present but not dominate. Double IPA done right. Nice stuff Great Lakes.

Cat pee, daffodil, and whole orange nose, very pungent. Hazy amber, thin head. Rosehips and orange, apricot overtones. Lemongrass finish. Full body, a little warm. Good complexity. Intense and not quaffable, but enjoyable in small doses.

Tap at Lake & Irving. Pint glass. Really appealing copper color with solid lacing and a bountiful head. Aroma is tropical fruit and sugars. Hops are there too. A pleasant double IPA that does a remarkable job of hiding its alcohol content. Taste walks the line of hops and sweetness well with an easy to palette finish that leans on the sugary nature. I can completely get behind this effort. Well done.

I like the aroma but not too strong. Copper color with a white frothy head. Love the how malty this beer is. And love the balance. Will seek this beer.

Pours a clear copper color. Very small thin white head with no lacing. Aroma is fruity and sweet smelling and maybe some alcohol. A sweet almost caramel taste. Hops are fruity and bright. Alcohol is noticeable. If I tasted this without knowing it was to be a DIPA I would have called it an American Strong Ale.
