LinusStick (1830), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 18, 2007 Aroma of hops and pine. Golden pour with no head. Looks kind of flat except for some small bubbling. Medium to thick mouthfeel. Strong hoppiness with a fizz is the best way to describe this beer. A little malt in the background but not much. Tastes like it came from the earth with the earthy and pine. I can see shooting at some food and up from the ground came this...blah...I am a dork. Bartzilla (441), San Diego, California, USA May 18, 2007 Hm. Not bad. Left a nice lingering bite in the back of my mouth. Not much else to report here. This is tasty, and par for the course. realale420 (399), west covina, California, USA May 17, 2007 Bottle poured a clear golden color with a nice white head. The aroma was mildly hoppy with some caramel. Taste was fairly bitter with a clean crisp hop finish. Not too much else going on in this one except being clean and easy to drink. NobleSquirrel (1094), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 17, 2007 nice and tasty little brew. The thing I like about Great Lakes is that they forgot the excess in favor of what tastes good. I’ll be the first to say that this is not an over the top IPA, but it qualifies as one of the most quaffable. Reminds me of Goose Island’s.... badgerben (3584), Blaine, Minnesota, USA May 12, 2007 Received in a trade from Crizay. Thanks! Golden color with no head. Strong, earthy hop aroma. The flavor is oddly wheaty, but it seems to work well. Moderate raw hop flavor with a little emphasis on pine and earth hops. Good. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA May 12, 2007 A 12 oz bottle shared by Badgerben. Pours a light clear golden yellow brew with a lasting white head. Aroma is piney, lemony citrus hops with some herbal spice. Taste is a well balanced IPA with bitter piney and flowery hop flavors. Finish is herbal hop and lightly bitter. argo0 (6842), Washington DC, USA May 11, 2007 (12oz bottle, thanks Drew) Large and beautiful off-white head atop a crystal clear apple juice body. Aroma is mild, medium sweet, apple. Taste is medium sweet, floral/pine, some fruity. Dry finish. Medium body, some resin. Alcohol not noticeable. BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 9, 2007 Great Lakes is one of my favorite breweries, but I was somewhat disappointed by this beer. When I opened this bottle, there was an unmistakable skunky aroma which I thought was impossible for an IPA. The bottle was in-code (stamped 06/19/2007). Eventually the aroma dissipated, but even without it I thought the flavor was just OK. Not recommended.
This beer was very light in color for an IPA with good head formation and a bright sparkling nature. Aroma was obviously skunky, but eventually most of this dissipated. Aside from the methyl butyl thiol (skunk), aroma was lightly hoppy and not terribly impressive. Flavor was very light for an IPA...more akin to an English style IPA. I could feel a bit of hops in the back of my throat but otherwise mouthfeel was a bit watery. I was surprised this beer is 7.5% ABV - not that 7.5% is a giant percentage, but nonetheless it was hidden fairly well in this beer.
I can’t say I’d recommend this beer.
