Nice solid head and a decent dark brown, near-black body. Lots of fresh hops on the nose, zero-minute I do believe, making this one a good smell for shure. Flavour is more hops, very floral in that respect, with a sharp citrusy hop finish. Notice the hops yet? I’d prefer a little bit more malt in the mix, it’s lacking complexity but darned drinkable to be ensured opun. Je pense.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Jayseppi (13) - Ontario, CANADA - DEC 19, 2011
Dark brown, bordering on black colour with a thick, foamy head. Lots of hops on the nose and in the flavour. Biterness dominates the flavour of this one, too much hopping without balance. Malts seem to fight the hop flavours to be notoiced. Medium to full bodied with a long finish, which is as bitter as the flavour. Cool idea, worth trying, but it could be improved with better balance.

Can from brewery. Really was surprised by this. Wasn’t figuring for the taste to be so big! Big hops up front with a very good malt backing to support it. This is a very solid beer.

From 473 ml can. Pours dark and hazy, almost brown with almost no head but slight oily head. Taste is somewhere between bitterness and sour.

Brown body, khaki head. Aroma of resiny hops, caramel, raisins and yeast. Flavour is surprisingly light, grains and resiny hops. thin aftertaste.

from can. pours a dark caramel colour with a good head that takes it’s time dissipating. strong hoppy aroma, very inviting, catchs your out because even though you know it;s hopped the dark colour has you in a stout frame of mind. Flavour initially makes me think of Crazy Canuck (another great GLB ale) some roasted malts slip through towards the end, nicely rounded and constantly interesting. not off putingly fizzy, i like it. Devil’s pale ale and Crazy Canuck offer up a superb Great Lakes Brewery double team.

Does pour pretty dark. Rich dark amber, with a light tan frothy head. Tons on lace and retention. There’s a nice floral hop aroma coming off it, with a strong caramel, nutty malt aroma in the back. Light flowery hop bite, and a rich sweet malt profile. Palates a bit on the rich and syrupy side, full bodied. In the end, it’s definitely an enjoyable beer. I think an amber ale would be more fitting of a style here.
