3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 can8ianben (1229) - Souderton, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 7, 2005Had this on tap in southern Michigan. It was served a little too cold, but it was still a treat to savour. Thick rich mouth feel compliment the dark taste. It isn’t too watery, some subtle hoppiness to give this more than just a smoky backbone. Good malt depth. The beer isn’t overwhelmingly good, just good.

This is a fabulous porter. Malty, chocolate and very smooth. Just a wonderfully balanced brew.

Dark brown, thin beige head. Slightly metallic aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, and hints of coffee. Mild sweetness punctuated with a little spice. Medium-bodied, a little thin, and little to no alcohol presence.

Truthfully, I’m not a big fan of porters. It’s not that they can’t be good, but there’s probably more bad porters out there than any other style of beer. This one is very decent, however. Very bitter with lots of raw coffee sensations, along with a roasted chocolate feeling on the tongue. There’s no medicinal mouth-feel here, which is good, but it is somewhat harsh. A success, but not something I’d want to drink too often.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Miked1687 (218) - Buffalo, New York, USA - MAY 14, 2013
Poured from a bottle into a glass. Extremely dark pour, neat black with a light brown head with some good lacing. Aroma is nice and roasted malt and coffee. Taste is a good mellow hop presence followed up with coffee and a hearty nutty and roasty flavor. Smooth mouth feel with medium carbonation. Truly a near perfect porter.

Poured into English pint glass. Dark chocolate aroma, chocolate, coffee taste. Dark in color, small but long lasting head. A wonderful porter. Glad Great Lakes is now in New Jersey.

Bottle at home. Pours a black with minimal head. Aroma of bitter chocolate. Taste of dark roastiness with a brilliant touch of chocolate bitterness. Among the very best Porters.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 gripweed57 (319) - Hamilton Square, New Jersey, USA - MAY 3, 2013
12 ounce bottle. Pours a translucent cocoa brown color with a large rocky beige head. Aroma has notes of espresso, milk chocolate and light smoke. Upfront, flavor is complex and flavorful with notes of bittersweet chocolate and smokey roasted malt. Mid taste brings dark roast coffee and spicy hops. Subtle bitter hops finish this porter nicely. Undoubtedly, one of the best American porters I have yet to taste. Silky, smooth, complex and flavorful. Outstanding!
