Wish there was a 3.5 for palate on this one. Extremely well balanced with a respectable depth.

This is a Vienna Lager? I had no idea. Pours coppery brown. Bready, wheaty aroma. sourish, citrus hopflavor, then earthy bitter finish. Underlying malt gives it a rich mouthfeel.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Darker amber/brown. No head. Smells like sweet yeast, maybe a little cinnamon, hops, caramel. Tastes good. Burst of bitterness and then calms right down. Sweet burnt marshmallow flavor. Dries out quickly. Nice beer from Cleveland.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: NOV 7, 2004 Dark amber color, decent head and lacing. Malty, sweet aroma. Sweet malt, roasted flavor with a slight bitterness towards the finish. The finish is slightly dry
I’ve been drinking this beer for a while now, and IMO it has one of the best finishes in beerdom. Slightly bitter, burnt brown sugar goodness. Excellent

I had this on tap at the brewery. The color is dark. It has a nice sweet yet hoppy smell. The flavor does not disappoint. It is another well balanced great lakes beer. It tastes like a dark, stronger dortmunder gold.

Great dark amber color, with a medium to almost heavy head. Great lacing on the glass. This beer had a very malty flavor and aftertaste. This is a sweet beer but not at all to sweet.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This is a good beer for those who like a lot of malt flavor. As I believe to be true with Vienna-style lagers, this beer is predominantly malt aroma and flavor, with enough hops to clean up the finish. At warmer temperatures, this beer exhibits a wonderful sweetness. But it's difficult to let it sit long enough to warm. Not much of a head to speak of, but that is just a minor detraction from the initial impresion of this beer.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Medium sized tight beaded tan head, remains as a slight ring around the inside of my tasting glass. Unfortunate , hazy amber/copper color. A really clean malt, grainy nose, bready. Medium body, kinda slick. Good malt flavors, but as it warms some slight bandaid flavors show up. Fairly dry finish.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: AUG 3, 2005 Re-Rated from draft at GLBC in Cleveland: Sweet amber color, kind of lemony, but not unpleasantly so. Very Mellow malts, just a touch of caramel. Hops are equally mellow, with just a little bitterness and graininess. A slight flourish of poerter malts toward the end.
Original rating: 9/16/03, Score: 4.1 Draft. Did not even realize this was a lager beer, thought it was more of a brown ale (that’s a compliment). A nice creamy head, almost stoutlike. Had a good beery smell with a touch of fruitiness that led me to think this was an ale. A complex hop taste that I thought had more American hops that the normal German ones. A delightful brew that stands out at any autumn party.

In addition to being a fine Vienna lager, Eliot Ness has a touch of smoke in the aroma and a bit more in the flavor. This may have been a defect in the bottle I tasted but it really made for nice complexity.
