First thing to say about Eliot Ness is it looks great, it’s a really intriguing dirty blonde shade that borders on red. So from the pour you’re not entirely sure what you’re gonna get, and the aroma doesn’t give off much clues, despite being nice enough. It’s actually quite hoppy, but there’s a strong malt backbone that offsets it nicely. It should be heavy, but it’s actually quite silky smooth and goes down very easily. It’s interesting, and just about drinkable enough to enjoy regularly as part of the Great Lakes sampler pack.

Bottle. Pours a medium amber color with a medium fizzy head that fades normally. Aroma is floral and grassy hops mixed with a light caramel and toasty malt. Taste is decent. Nobel hops balanced with caramel and toasted malt. Crisp finish. It’s pretty solid but nothing ever excites me about amber lagers.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 kramer (3876) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 29, 2013
Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber body with a small fizzy off-white head that left a bit of lacing. The nose is nicely malty with a nice caramel base and a minimal hop overtone. A bit grainy and husky perhaps. The flavor is a bit huskier and grainy than I care for, I wish it were a bit smoother and cleaner. It’s so husky and rough that I can hardly believe that this is a lager. Dry and toasty with a slight nutty note on the finish along with a bit of light bitterness. Medium bodied, dry and grainy, fizzy prickly carbonation. This is one of those beers that didn’t stand up to my lofty expectations from having this beer many years ago before rating became a regular thing for me.
