GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jul 22, 2008 12oz bottle. Smelled of caramel, toffee, steeping barley, mango and citrusy hops. Poured a clear reddish-orange color. The head was light tan with an orange tint. Some lace was left behind at the end. Medium bodied and slightly sweet with toffee, toasted bread, and subdued mango flavors. Mild citrus and spruce flavors emerged and there was some alcohol at the end. The hops imparted a mild to moderate ho bitterness to round out the sugars. Not bad. doppelmeup (51), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jun 29, 2008 This poured a reddish amber with decent head that left nice lacing clinging to the glass all the way down.
Hoppy aroma of cut grass and grapefruit; more than I was expecting, but a nice surprise.
Taste was full bodied, with a sharp hop bite balanced by a malty backbone.
Moderately thick mouthfeel that gave a nice finish to the drink.
Overall, this was a decent beer and I would recommend it.
jeffwilliams11 (310), hooterville, Michigan, USA Jun 13, 2008 pours fizzy red with little head. very hoppy, not at all what i expected. very drinkable, hides the 8% very well. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jun 11, 2008 The color was amber. The head was thin, white, and fizzy. The aroma was sweet, spicy, and hoppy. The flavor was the same. The palate was full-bodied. The finish was warm. emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jun 11, 2008 Thanks bmartin. Pours a deep copper brown with a two finger creamy tan head. The nose is malty, sweet, citrusy, earthy basement nose, caramel. The flavor is dry and waxy, hoppy, malty as well, nicely balanced, sweet, grapefruit peel, citrusy afterbite and a dry finish. Very full mouthfeel with a nice texture. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA May 12, 2008 Glassy amber resin; staying white. Graham cracker, grassy hop, sticky caramel malt, grilled pineapple, and honey in an aroma delicately balanced. Sweetness and bitterness, attitude and subtlety. Pleasingly careful. Flavor is very dry and sweet like sugared yerba mate, with all the earthy richness of good tea leaning uneasily at times into that cloying, icy sweetness of crystal malts that often ruins renditions of this style. So herbal and earthy. The dank, hemp and grass character of the hops really shines through warmly, with a softening light on the dried fruit and cracker character of the malts. Fresh suggestions of blood orange and grapefruit weep high alpha acids. These flavors are so bold and urgent that in many examples they seem contrived and careless, but here they’re tightly reined, polished and trained. Palate is full and aggressive; alternating wet sweetness and barren hops. Sweetness overtaking preceding the finish; honey and toffee malt seeming quite tangy. Chasing dry hop conclusion. Straightforward; a big, balls out, self obsessed strong ale done with ease and assurance. Thanks Bill! MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA May 10, 2008 Bottle from Canals. Clear reddish pour with 2 finger thick white head. A bread like, sugar and citrus aroma. Sweet malt taste with a hint of pine that finishes dry. This was shockingly pretty good. Odyn (205), New York, USA May 8, 2008 Updated: Jan 21, 2009Full of flavor with complex body. Definitely a beer to sip, not an all day drinker. Not one for the faint hearted!
