Commercial Description:
Often referred to as Burning River Pale Ale's big brother, this stock ale is remarkably balanced for such a highly hopped beer. A rich deep blood red color makes this beer scary enough to be served every Halloween and a few other times of the year.

12 oz bottle from West Lake View Liquors. The owner put it on sale b/c its been sitting around for to many months. Its was still worth a try to me. Pours an amber orange with a tall head. Aroma of malt, citrus, hops, and bready. Malt flavors, carmel, toffee, bready, a little citrus. I guess it is supposed to be hoppier, but I really enjoyed it. I am surprised to see the alcohol so high, very well hidden. A nice offering from GLBC.

sampled from a 12oz bottle. not sure how fresh this bottle but i believe this was from a new batch just released. the reason for mentioning that is i found this to not be nearly as hoppy as i remember it. a very balanced nuts and caramel in both nose and flavor. alcohol was very well hidden. and hops are pretty subdued. a decent ASA but i thought i liked this a lot more before............................................ sampled an aged bottled best before 11/23/06. yikes! this was bad, somewhat sour, carboard, and vegetable. undrinkable. oh well.

Bottle via Puddintane. Pours a deep and musty garnet color with a nice ivory head. Super sweet, wort-like aroma. A very balanced brew. Somewhat sweet with a Carmel and dark fruit flavor. Clean, fruity finish. A nice beer.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark ruby red with no head. Aroma is sweet, hoppy, syrupy, grapefruit. Looks and smells like a barley wine. Taste is sweet, bitter, hoppy, piney, earthy. This is a nicely balanced, hoppy beer that’s not too sweet thankfully.

alcohol is dominant in this one, decent hop flavor, smells and tastes what a stron ale should smell and taste like.

FOURTH TRIAL: I’ve had this beer a few times before at (what tastes like) varying degrees of freshness. The first few times I’ve had it, it had a great hop presence, a nice malty backbone, and a bit of rye flavore. However, this time, it was much less hoppy and the malt and alcohol seemed to have taken a more dominant position. It was still good, but not as good as the first few trials. When both are fresh, I slightly prefer Founder’s Red’s Rye (which tastes quite similar to me), but to me, this beer seems to age a bit better (still rather have it fresh though). Overall, a great beer: great looking, great lacing, great smelling, and great tasting.

12oz bottle from moejuck - thanks, Joe! This beer wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but it’s quite nice. A pumped up, fairly hoppy amber, I’m not sure of its relation to its pale ale younger sibling. But regardless of that, it’s nice looking, medium bodied, with a piquant quality to the flavors and just a tad of a bite (from hops, from spice, who knows?). Fine stuff.
