dirkules (613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 17, 2006 Sampled at Great Lakes. An interesting brew. It’s an american strong with a lot of characteristics of the belgian strong, but mellowed out. Dark brown/tawny in colour with spicy malts and a decent amount of hop. Raisin and caramel are prominent. lemon and cherry hide as well. This was a nice seasonal to get a glimpse of. Will have to come back in June for their stout seasonal. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Sep 15, 2006 Bottle from Sean, thanks! Damn, wanted to try this for a long time. Bright (dark?) red in color. This is a really fresh bottle. Smell is mostly hops, some malts and a little sweetness. Taste is bitter and strong, sweet and caramel, much like a barley wine. A little harsh perhaps, but pretty nice, hope it will mellow out in another year or so. I really enjoyed it, and the label is really cool. BrockLanders (747), Panama City, Florida, USA Sep 13, 2006 This rating is overdue. Bottle back in 2005. Hazy amber pour..small whitish head. Spicy, moderately sweet nose..caramelish. More sweet malty flavor...citric hoppiness too, herbal and earthy as well. Nice lingering bitterness in the end...decent mouthfeel...enjoyable. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 12, 2006 Definitely pours a reddish color witha small head. Aroma was very fruity malty and had a little hoppiness. The flavor was bitter and had a lot of citrus hoppiness and also a little sweet. This was pretty balanced. Another great beer from great lakes. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Sep 11, 2006 12oz, Please enjoy by Nov 23/06. Pours a not quite blood red, though it is copper red with a one finger beige head. Aroma of pine resin grapefruit, and pineapple almost to the point of astringency, some caramel and lightly toasted malts, brown sugar. There is some candy sugary sweetness, but There’s a buttload of hops off balancing this brew as best they can. More grapefruity, spicy, and resiny hops in the taste. The alcohol isn’t really hiding at all, though isn’t terribly strong either for 8%. The beer has a lingering chalky bitter finish. Not as full bodied as I’d imagined (medium) and soft moderate carbonation. Quite nice. vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Sep 11, 2006 A cause for celebration when this is released, one of my favorites. Pours a beautiful dark amber / bronze with a good sized tan head that does a very nice job of lacing the glass. The aroma has dark fruit and lots of floral hops and citrus hops that blend grapefruit and pineapples. There is a cane sugar like sweetness. Medium to full bodied with a slick resiny feel and a good deal of moderate intensity carbonation. Taste has lots of tropical-esque citrus, dark roasted mlat and some piney woody hops. Very full flavored beer. The finish has lots of grapefruit hops and and plenty of the initial flavor. An incredibly balanced hearty beer that I hope to experience many times this fall. cewldre (268), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Sep 9, 2006 Bottle: Pours a dark red/ brick red type color with a small, light red tan. I am having a hard time placing what I am smelling, maybe some hint of grapefuit and pine. It does smell good though. Has a nice sweet aroma to it. The taste is also hard for me to place. I can taste a nice amount of hop bitterness, but it does not overshadow the sweetness of the malt. I also sense a little bit of grapefruit that I had smelled, there on my palate. This is a very good beer. RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Sep 9, 2006 Draft at the brewhouse. Aroma: Caramel, sweet malt, and alot of hops. Lots of grapefruit and resin, with some pine and floral, as well. A subtle earthiness underlies the whole thing. Appearance: Deep copper with strong red tint. Light biege head was small and rocky. fair lacing. Flavor: Sweet malt, light caramel and brown sugar, a touch of dried cherry. Hops come in with some grapefruit, resin, and floral notes and a strong bitterness. Palate: Medium-full bodied with a slight stickiness. Medium carbonation. Finish is slightly sweet with a strong hop bitterness. Overall: One of my favorite things about fall is the release of Nosferatu. A great brew. This years seems a little more bitter than last years, but still great nonetheless.
