Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA Sep 8, 2006 Pours a reddish copper color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is of citrus and pine hops, caramel, and molasses. Flavor starts off with fruit and sweet malts, then finishes with the caramel, citrus, and pine hops. Decently bitter finish. Been waiting to try this beer for awhile and I was pleased with it. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Sep 7, 2006 Bottle purchased at Party Time. Thanks to Ross for recommending this one. Aroma of spicy hops, toasted sweet bread, malt, but not very assertive in my sample. Pours a translucent reddish brown and with diminishing off white head. Very nice mouthfeel. Initial flavor of toasted malt that transistions into a maple like sweetness. Earthy tea flavors in the finish alongside some nice herbal hop bitterness. Nice bold beer without the huge body. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 5, 2006 Ah fall is coming, college football on TV and Nosferatu in my fridge. Clear deep red pour, with a medium white head that dissapated quickly. Aroma, piney hop notes, some sugary malts, bready, mollasses. Flavor, resinous hops, some carmelly sweetness, a nice earthy bitterness on the finish. Delicious brew, next to the Blackouts, my favorite of the great lakes line. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jul 18, 2006 Dated best before 10-07-05. dark copper with 1 finger off white head. Aroma has a huge bready malt character, mostly toffee and mollasses, hops have faded to only a background note, mostly pine resin with faint citrus. Flavor again is huge malt sweetness, starting to develop a little cardboard character, with more citrus hop bitters coming through in the finish. Nice creamy smooth body and mouthfeel. Wish I would have tried this fresh, before the hop charcater died down. Another future re-rate. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 6, 2006 Thanks to kmpitz2 for this.
Freshness date of 9/23/05 but aged and enjoyed on 6/6/06...
Appears a copper toned amber with a frothy off white head that slowly dies down into a mild cap and collar. Tons of chunky streaks of lacing are all over the glass. Mild streams of carbonation slowly rise to the top.
Smell is of biscuits and caramel up front with a sugar cookie yeastiness followed by pine and sugar filled grapefruit hops.
Taste is of the same aromas with a nice sugary malt & piney blend the comes together nicely.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, very chewy, with palate bouncing, lip smacking sugary hops that lead to a bitter but sugary, semi-dry finish.
Reminds me a little bit of Legacy’s Hedonism for some reason but more balanced and a bit more drinkable. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA May 24, 2006 A more impressive offering from Great Lakes. Hazy amber body under a fleeting beige head. Hops assault the nose with touches of caramel, herbal tea, and a splash of vanilla. Medium body with a smooth full mouthfeel. The flavor started with sweet caramel honts but came on strong with the hops bitterness. Quite nice. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA May 18, 2006 Updated: Feb 18, 2009Orange/amber color with a thick creamy white head. At cold temps the aroma is malty and smooth with a touch of hops. The flavor is delicious and smooth with only a cleansing bite of hops. A truly classic and beautiful ale.9/5/9/5/18
RERATE: 2008 version. 12oz bottle from BOTW. Pours a deep garnet with a thin film of white cream and lace. Strong aroma of pungent hops. Grapefruit and rich malts. Flavors are a mix the rich malts and of strong bitter hops. Well blended for a young beer and surprisingly balanced. Hard to describe, but fantastic. 7/4/9/5/19 sandwichpants (117), Royal Oak, Michigan, USA Apr 13, 2006 From a bottle into a pub style glass. Pours a medium red, clear, with a slightly tan head that retains quite well. Aroma started out with a sweet/citrus/hops that was almost candy like just as it was poured, to being a fairly mild, more piney hop as it settled. Pleasant, but weak. Flavour, on the other hand, it’s good and strong. Very well balanced, a bit more towards the malt which is rich carmel offset with strong toastyness and roastyness, a little coffee even. Hops are still quite prevalent, tasting, well, hoppy, rather than specifically piney or floral or citrusy. Body is a slightly heavy medium, with a bit of stickyness, and a good bit of bitterness (perhaps augmented by alcohol) causing a little tinglyness. A little more bitterness in feel at the end than I would prefer, but otherwise, this is a darn fine beer. Very refreshing for how big a beer it is.
