mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 31, 2006 bottle. pours a reddish-copper body with a large fluffy white head. the aroma is pretty solid and pleasing - yeast, sweet bread, earth, and thick chewy hops. interesting flavour though it seems vaguely similar to something I’ve had before! rich, chewy malt spine leading into flavourful citric hops that are by no means overwhelming. yeasty mouthfeel with a warm alcohol presence. This stuff is really easy to drink despite the seemingly high alcohol heft. Bought at Bello Vino in Ann Arbor in March of 2006. DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA Mar 31, 2006 Updated: Jan 11, 2007Pours an amber color with a small head.Hoppy nose with some sweetness.Drank well till the bitterness came in at the end. murrayswine (101), Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, USA Mar 27, 2006 This beer reminds me a lot like Gumballhead.
It pours a nice amber/red color, with a sturdy head. he nos is filled with a hell of a lot of hops, which I like a whole hell of a lot. There’s also a slightly citrus smell, with parts of cane sugar.
The smell delivers the taste, true hops, light lemon/green apple. the finish is smooth and bitter, with a touch of alcohol. All in all, this is a damn fine beer!
nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA Mar 24, 2006 Pours a transparent copper color with a small off white head that turns to a thin off white film within seconds. The aroma is full of candied sugars, caramel malt, a bit of smoke, and small bit of grass. The flavor holds some of the same characteristics as the aroma, but the grass comes out more with a hoppy bite torwards the back and the sweet sugary malt seems more subdued than in the aroma. Malty thougha bit watery over the tounge with a bitter finish that holds some soapy qualitties to it. This beer feels pretty balanced...not hard to drink by any means, but I do kind of wish it was a bit harder to drink...a beer this strong shouldn’t be this easy to drink! HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Mar 22, 2006 Bottle (12oz). Shared with Sammy and DrJay, DrJay’s bottle. Poured reddish gold with a big foamy lasting crreamy off-white head. Nice floral/herbal hop aroma, funky mix of UK and US (Centennial?) varieties, solid sweet malt and yeast backbone too, almost perfumy and delicate to go with the hops. Flavour was a surprise, not very sweet at all, quite bitter with all those hops working, almost grassy, dry, crisp - nice! Dry, lightly carbonated, astringent mouthfeel - this one screams "session." Thanks again for sharing, Jay. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 21, 2006 honeyish colour, lots of light lace. Medium to full mouthfeel, hoppy and scotchy and honey aroma. Rich bitterness, citrussy, lace cushioning tongue. Carmel for some balance. Very drinkable. Very good old ale. Variety of hops UK and American in here. Thanks Doc Jay.
entertheiceman (242), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 20, 2006 Trasparent red pour with carbonation bubbles constantly rising from the bottom in a chapaigne like manner to feed the medium-sized tan head. Aroma is sour hops and some bread. In the mouth it is a bit thin up front with a smooth malt middle and a long lingering bitter grapefruit finish. If you enjoy the "Bastard" series of ales offered by Stone but find them too strong to be session ales then this should be your thing. Thaichile (599), 10aFly, New Jersey, USA Mar 16, 2006 Bottle. Pours a deep reddish amber. Not nearly the red, blood like color as indicated in the commercial description. That was actually a disappointment as I was looking forward to seeing a color like that. Malt on the nose. Flavors of vanilla, malt and fruit with some hoppiness. It had a thick mouthfeel and flavors inproved as the beer warmed. A gift from Beervana.
