Commercial Description:
Often referred to as Burning River Pale Ale's big brother, this stock ale is remarkably balanced for such a highly hopped beer. A rich deep blood red color makes this beer scary enough to be served every Halloween and a few other times of the year.

A reddish brown color witha light spotty white topping that is gone within seconds. Has a really big hop aroma thing goin on that quickly turns into fuel kinda like nailpolish remover. I got just a medium malt thing goin on in the body with maybe some spices or veggies or something.

Thanks to both OhioDad and beeryum for this beer.

Poured a clear effervescent light ruby with a small fizzy off-white head which dissipated completely. Clean pleasant aroma of grassy and piney hops with a touch of sweetness. Flavor is predominantly grassy hops, with a touch of maple syrup sweetness, but just a touch, mind you. The grassy taste of the hops slowly overwhelms the sweetness and culminates into a long bitter finish. Strikes me like a less blanced Arrogant Bastard Ale. Body was decent, though perhaps a little thin and somewhat overcarbonated. Pretty good.

Reddish amber color with a large head (maybe a little sudsy, though) that laces nicely as it diminishes. Smells of spice and hops, which dominate the flavor after the initial, mild sweetness of the malt gives way to the hops. It comes off as a bit unbalanced near the end, though, which is a bit of a shame since it promises so much right up to that point. It’s really nicely put together, but falls apart a little at the end as the hops overpower.

Clear amber-gold-orange hue with a medium, creamy, off-white head. Strong herbal/floral and pungent pine aroma. Dark bread, light brown sugar malts. Starts out pretty sweet (german base malts?) with a moderate bitterness. Lightly sweet, heavily bitter finish. Perfume like. Medium-full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation.

By remarkably balanced I believe they mean "over-hopped." Its not the content of hops (i.e. Devil Dancer "over-hops" and does well), but here the hops come off unbalanced. There’s some spice and heat here, accentuated by my having some post-rating with a red sauce and fresh herbs from the garden. Unfortunately, a lot of the complexity is lost to the hops. They’ve done well with their porter, stout, and dortmunder, but this disappointed me.

A spicey floral aroma is present and the color is a medium golden brown. The taste of hops is present from the beginning and remains so throughout.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for this one for years. Scored the last two bottles a few weeks ago at Viking premium beverage on King Ave in Columbus. Pours a medium clear copper. The tall off white head is creamy with fair lace. The nose has primarily hop notes of spice, spruce, and resin, with a hint of lilac. The flavor starts with a blast of hop bitterness right from the get-go. Maintains the status quo through to the finish which adds a touch of alcoholic presence. The body is medium creamy and soft, but has a slightly "loose" feel. Not bad, but didn’t meet my expectations.
