Often referred to as Burning River Pale Ale’s big brother, this stock ale is remarkably balanced for such a highly hopped beer. A rich deep blood red color makes this beer scary enough to be served every Halloween and a few other times of the year.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2014 Pours a dark ruby amber with a nice head and lacing. Nice nose of caramel malt with a touch of noble hops. An excellent ale that I wish was available all year. Very well balanced with a medium mouthfeel that is also slick. Well carbonated. This is an example of how to properly hop a beer. The hop flavor is pronounced but without a harsh bitterness against a full caramel background. The taste lingers of fresh hop resin. Increase the malt bill a bit and this becomes a Gold Medal exceptional ale. While medium bodied with a slick mouthfeel, the finish is crisp from the carbonation leaving you with a slightly sweet aftertaste over a noble hop bitterness with a touch of smoke.

Dark amber pour, pretty cloudy, full inch of beige head on top. Cottony scent, sweet hay, limey/cilantro hops and pungent rye. Lots of carmel malt in the taste, mixed with hop flavors of pine, melon notes present too. Average to soft carbonation, full bodied, slick finish. Pretty good big beer, nice bitterness and not overly carmel.

Pours a dark, clear red, bright, with a medium and frothy off white head. The aroma is strong in caramel, while being complimented with pine, grapefruit, cereal, and some fruity notes of apple and strawberry. The taste contains some sweetness as well as bitter. Caramel and pine hit you initially, heavy pine in the middle, and giving way to fruit flavors at the end. Aftertaste has pine and berries. More full in body, with a sticky, thicker texture. Quite a bit of carbonation as well. This one is good, although it would probably be better if it wasn’t as complex. But its still a good offering.

Pours a reddish amber with a sticky foam head. The aroma is of sweet carmel malts, very grain like, and slight citrus hop scent. In the flavor I picked up on malts, carmel malts, and a medium bitterness. Overall this was a descent beverage.

From a bottle. Dark red color. Solid, balanced hoppiness, not too hot. Not really my style, but solid.

On tap at Dark Horse Tavern for Oct. pours dark red. Almost no head ( maybe because it's almost too cold!) immediate citrus pine hoppy taste that also has a caramel hint. And a slight sweetness that fades to that familiar bitter IPA taste. ( dark would only pour a 12 oz (short) and not a tall presumably due to the alcohol content) ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Wanted this one for a while probably mostly because of my liking with the film. But a nice beer overall. Would try again.

Bottle pour. Interesting clear orange/brown color with a head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma has strong caramel and biscuit notes with citrus hop as well. Sweet nutty flavors up front with earthy, resinous, and caramel elements. Palate includes creamy textures, with a little fizz and a medium body.

Pours reddish brown and tan head with nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and pine hops with sweet bread. Taste is well balanced with caramel malts and a slightly bitter aftertaste.

On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh). Definitely a red - pours red with a bit of head that disappeared quickly. Very fresh aroma - citrusy... Pleasant taste - somewhat piney and fruity. A touch of bitterness on the aftertaste. Tldr - not too shabby... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
