COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Often referred to as Burning River Pale Ale’s big brother, this stock ale is remarkably balanced for such a highly hopped beer. A rich deep blood red color makes this beer scary enough to be served every Halloween and a few other times of the year.

Pours with a bright amber body topped by a thin head with some lacing. The aroma is sweet and malty with notes of caramel and fruit, as well as alcohol esters. The flavor is similar with a bitter, piney hop flavor. Agressive on the tongue with a warming sensation.

Bottle. Pours a hazy copper color with a slight head but the head remains as well as a great sticky lace. Nose is surprisingly sweet malty and hoppy with a smoked quality... what the hell is this brew? OH MY... what a nice beer! Why did I allow this one to sit in my beer fridge for so long? Great body and mouthfeel, silky and smooth. Roasted malt taste with great English hops pounding my taste buds (they buds are masochists and are begging for more!). This is one of Great Lakes best offerings... quite a nice strong ale!

Piney and grassy hops, citrus, light fruit, burnt sugar in the aroma. More orange than red, clear, thin white head. Nice flavor, citrusy hops, sweet malt, a little caramel, light fruit. Solid bitterness. Medium full body. I’ve been sitting on this bottle for a few months, and the age did it well. Rounded out the flavors nicely.

Pours rich and auburn with minimal head. A barley wine nose with butterscotch and jasmine highlights. The flavor is hoppy and a tad acrid. A strong green tea element that ends bitter. Overall, quite interesting. The alcohol doesn’t dominate, yet it is certainly present.

Poured a reddish amber with small tan head. Sweet malty aroma with some hop smell. Nice hoopy caramel malt flavor with an alcohol taste.

Bottle. Large fizzy ivory head that mostly diminished, fair lacing, fine-small sized bubbles, carbonated, transparent, and an orange hue. Aroma was malty, hoppy, caramel, and sweet. Sweet, malty and a very hoppy flavor which was not much to my liking. Mouthfeel was tingly, dry and hoppy. Light-medium body. Just too hoppy for me.

boittle - many thanks to badgerben for the beer! Pours dark reddish amber with a moderate off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is malty sweet and heavy on the floral and citrus hops - slight hint of turpentine, but not in a bad way. Sweet rich flavor, lots of caramel and toasty malts to ground this brew, full hop finish and lingering piney pucker. Medium to full body and gentle carbontion. Over all, a very nice brew and treat from the midwest.

bottle-purchased at Rileys liquor store in Madison, WI-pours a nice copper hue with some slight haze from the yeast. piney, sweet apple aroma. pinney earthy hop tones. slightly hot, cinnamon finish. The C hop notes make this beer have that cinnamon characteristic that is kinda interesting. all the other reviews say this has huge hops-i thought they were kinda subdued maybe due to some slight aging. not a bad offering from great lakes.

Beautiful dark garnet; very small head; lots of tiny floaties. First whiff makes me think, "IPA"; alas, aroma mostly hops with substantial citrus notes and perhaps some caramel. Flavor is big: significant malt but overshadowed by the huge hop presence; again, some caramel. Full-bodied, yet clean. Too hoppy for my tastes, but very good nonetheless.

I found this beer in a bottle in Indianapolis. The smell if of nice citrus hops. The beer has a nice thick consistency to it when poured. The taste is very full and has nice hop bite. I think this is more a double IPA than a strong ale, but anyway -- it’s great!
