THOUGHTS: A little harsh, actually. It didn’t do a great job disguising the alcohol content. I prefer more malty red ales.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, slightly reddish, amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left virtually no lacing. The aroma contained moderate to heavy; grain and caramel malts; hints of chocolate; and moderate perfume, pine, citrus and earth hops. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was heavily sweet and moderate to heavily bitter with a long duration. There was caramel malt, lemon hops, grain, pine hops, perfume hops and rye. The medium body was a little syrupy and then very dry with fizzy carbonation and a light to moderately alcoholic finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Kobal (57) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - MAR 17, 2013
This red pours a hazy copper with an off-white head. Nose is sweet hops with a hint of lemon. Dry pine dominates the palate with a metallic tingle following. Some wood notes come through the full, creamy body. Feels heavy in the mouth but doesn’t sit heavy in the stomach. Hops give a pleasant bite perfect for the beer’s namesake.

Dark red-brown color, white lace. Aroma of molasses, barley, hops, burnt AND roasted malt, apples and something; possibly bourbon. Taste is sweet, malt, lighter fruits, pine, sugar. Delicious ASA effort. Wow, freaking Great Lakes, what would I do without you...

Aroma is citrus and sweetish malts. The flavor is grapefruit, fruit, mild sweetness and a long and bitter/tangy finish. Good but the sweetish malts were slightly off-putting, too many bad hoppy ales out there that do that, wish this one didn’t.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 marv3mania (66) - Lansing, Michigan, USA - JAN 28, 2013
Bottle poured into a snifter. Beautiful reddish copper with moderate white head, dissipates fairly quickly with light lacing. Aroma is strong caramel malts with pine and bits of hops and floral scents. The taste is a fantastic balance of hops and malt with a distinct pine taste and very bitter aftertaste at the back of the throat. Smooth and crisp feel with a good amount of carbonation. I love this beer, one of the best I’ve tried.

Bottle, courtesy of BLADT. Thanks, brah. The pour’s deep red with a small white head. Attractive color. The nose is rich toasty malts, plenty of caramel, red berry, spruce, grassy hops. Light bubblegum sweetness. The taste is red berry, spruce, grassy hops. Rich malt body. Plenty of caramel, chewy body. Bitter finish. A touch of bread. Medium finish, robust, mildly boozy. Overall, very nice.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Chuckaduck (490) - Kentucky, USA - DEC 23, 2012
Pours a clear dark copper with a thin white head. Aroma is lots of fruit, pine, citrus, caramel. Taste is similar, hoppy; big flavors of caramel, pine, citrus, with a nice alcohol kick near the back end. Some nice lacing. Nice chewy mouth feel. I would have thought this a DIPA. This was really great.
