Often referred to as Burning River Pale Aleís big brother, this stock ale is remarkably balanced for such a highly hopped beer. A rich deep blood red color makes this beer scary enough to be served every Halloween and a few other times of the year.

THOUGHTS: A little harsh, actually. It didnít do a great job disguising the alcohol content. I prefer more malty red ales. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, slightly reddish, amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left virtually no lacing. The aroma contained moderate to heavy; grain and caramel malts; hints of chocolate; and moderate perfume, pine, citrus and earth hops. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was heavily sweet and moderate to heavily bitter with a long duration. There was caramel malt, lemon hops, grain, pine hops, perfume hops and rye. The medium body was a little syrupy and then very dry with fizzy carbonation and a light to moderately alcoholic finish.

On draft at Crimson American Grill, York, PA, served in a shaker glass. Pours clear reddish amber, One finger dense off white head with awesome lacing and retention. Aroma of toffee and herbs. Taste is primarily sweet but has enough bitterness in the background to balance. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, slick mouth feel. The finishes reveals a drying bitterness. Tasting notes of caramel, toffee, nuts, wildflowers, grass and light citrus. A great strong ale that I would drink again.

Part of a sampler at Jet Rock at PHL terminal B. Clear amber with off white head. All malt. Malt, malt and more malt. Slight alcohol burn and slight cloying. Did not get the hops out of this, but not bad.

Pours amber with a tan head. Fruity malt aroma with caramel and pine. Flavor is caramel malt up front with fruity flavors. Finishes with bitter pine. Nice beer , perfect Halloween beer.

Pours a dark deep amber with a thin tan head. Aroma is pine hops, with some caramel sweetness, citrus and bread. Flavor is hop forward for sure, moderately sweet with caramel malts, bread, and plenty of piney hops. Long finish had some earthiness. Not bitter but a little too hoppy for my taste. Interesting brew.

Clear royal-red pour with two finger off-white head (fairly vigorous pour). Malt-loaded toastiness, autumnal foliage and sweetness, inklings of cascade-like hops on nose. As always with Great Lakes, supremely balanced. Sweet, richly gliding toasted malts escorting a tapered yet satisfying grapefruit flowery hoppiness. Artfully crafted. Not sure about such negative reviews, but Great Lakes tends to brew very traditionally and with great balance and integrity. Of course it wonít be a complex hop bomb, itís a red ale. Either way, very proud to be a stones throw from these guys.
