dkoonce (710), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA Apr 18, 2007 On tap at the brew pub. Black, with a medium head that is smooth a creamy. Slightly burnt malt aroma, with some hops. Mostly burnt malt flavor. A bit sweet, with a light body. Dogbrick (2035), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 19, 2006 On draught at the brewpub. GLBC has a couple great Stouts, namely Blackout (esecially the Barrel-Aged) and Wolfhound. Being a Stout-lover and knowing their track record, I was looking forward to their take on the Sweet Stout. While not disappointed, the beer does fall just a bit short. The beer pours black as pitch with a thick and foamy light tan head and sticky lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate. Creamy with a medium body and roasted character. Flavors of coffee, malt and chocolate are tasty but don’t resonate long enough. The finish is dry with a mild bitterness. Good for the style, but I know GLBC could do even better. dirkules (611), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 17, 2006 As a big fan of the Sam Smiths, I felt underwhelmed with this brew. It’s only available on tap at the moment. There’s a good roast to it but a bit too much carbonation. There’s oats and coffee and a dry finish. It can be tweaked I believe and then it will be absoltely amazing. RagallachMC (593), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Sep 8, 2006 Darft at the brewpub. Aroma: Nice roasted grain aroma with a noticeable oat overtone. Hints of coffee and chocolate and roasted nuts. Appearance: Dark brown/light black with a medium tan head. Head was big and creamy with good retention. Fair lacing. Flavor: Nice stout flavor with good roastiness. Again the oats are very noticeable. Coffee, chocolate, and light caramel. A nice smokiness in there, as well. Palate: Medium-light bodied and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Finish was pretty dry with a touch of astringency. Overall: Oatmeal plays a nice role here. Good, solid stout. Perhaps a little higher mouthfeel. mhoster56 (34), Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 11, 2006 Bottle. A solid oatmeal stout. The beer has a roasted coffee flavor which is not overbearing. It has a slightly sweet, yet not sickenly so, aftertaste, which prevents the beer from appearing as dry as a regular stout could be. This number could be slightly more alcoholic for my taste -- somewhere in the 6.5 to 7 percent range like Troegs Oatmeal Stout -- as the initial flavor leaves a little bite to be desired. I desperately wished that I would have poured this beer into a glass to sufficently capture its aroma.
