Poured reddish-brown with a thin beige head. Murky body. Aroma of malt, toffee, and dark fruits not unlike grape juice. Seemed to have a thin body. Not my favorite.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best by 5/29/2012. Pours very cloudy reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice thick cap that lasts. Some decent soapy lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of raisin, caramel, prune, molasses, biscuit, toasted malt, nuttiness, chocolate, pepper, earth, and light herbal spiciness. Nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of raisin, prune, caramel, molasses, bread, toasted malt, honey, chocolate, earth, nuttiness, and light herbal spiciness. Big malt flavors on the finish with some spiciness; with lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, biscuit, chocolate, and toast on the finish for a bit. Flavors were not as robust as I was hoping for, but were still extremely balanced with good complexity. No cloying sweetness at all; with a slightly dry finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel which is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed at all after the finish. Very easy to sip on. Overall this is a really nice doppelbock. Nice flavor balance with good complexity; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Aroma of brown sugar/molasses, chocolate and nougat. Appearance was dark caramel with tan head. Flavor matched the nose, with an emphasis on fudge-y chocolate. Palate was bubbly. Solid, but not a standout.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DerWeg (1271) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 7, 2012
Wow, a big and wine-like doppel with some references to Edmund Fitzgerald. There’s the dark winey fruit, with some chocolate, tobacco and earthiness, topped with a bit of lemon-like acidity. Full feel at room temperature, with notable alcohol. Has some barnyardy hay/manure aromas, not as much as some Bavarian examples. I still consider this a USA-style Doppel but a very good one! One of the best beers of late.
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 dbarnold (677) - Bethesda, Maryland, USA - APR 26, 2012
I’m not a fan is this style apparently...Big malt bomb that tastes like dirt to me. Palate is very flat. Heavy and I can’t tell why. Confirmed with my friend jcos that it was good for the style, so I guess it’s just not my thing.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 DavoleBomb (1143) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 25, 2012
Poured into a snifter.
5.0 A: Black color. Two and a half fingers of creamy beige head. Retention is very good and glass covering lacing is left.
3.5 S: Toasty with caramel and toffee. Somewhat grainy. Maybe I was having some olfactory hallucinations, but I could smell some pussy a few whiffs.
3.5 T: Again toasty with caramel and toffee. The taste also has a fairly strong vinous cherry component to it.
4.0 M: Heavier medium body. Good weight without being overly sweet. Moderate carbonation with a light creaminess.
3.5 D: Not bad, but not as good as a typical GL brew.

Dark brown. Mild aroma, not a lot there, some sweet malt. Flavor has sweet caramel. Some wood as well. I would like a heavier palate, but it is a good beer.

Draft at Capone’s: Aroma of malt, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and some nuts. Poured amber/red in color with a small, creamy, dense, tan head that lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Very good lacing. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malt, toast, slight toffee, slight caramel, slight rye bread, slight honey bread, a hint of brown sugar, and wheat bread. Medium body. Thinish, then slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, bread, slight toffee finish is lightly sweet. 7.8%ABV is completely hidden throughout.
