Customers have spoken and GLBC has listened! On Thursday, December 17, 2009 (the 106th anniversary of the first fixed-wing flight), GLBCís Brewpub will release The Wright Pils, a classic pilsner style beer with a flowery bouquet and elegantly dry finish. Named after the brothers Wright who built the worldís first successful controlled airplane, this pilsner, like these local heroes, has all the Wright stuff! In early 2010, expect to see The Wright Pils in 6-packs in the GLBC Gift Shop, as well as on draft in Concourse C at Cleveland Hopkins Airport! TYPE/STYLE: Pilsner. Until the 1840s, most Bohemian (now Czech Republic) beers were top-fermented, dark and cloudy, although Bavarian brewers had begun experimenting through "lagering" beer in cool caves using bottom-fermenting yeasts, which improved the beerís clarity, flavor, and shelf-life. The Burgess Brewery recruited the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll who, using new techniques and the newly available paler malts, created the first batch of modern pilsener on October 5, 1842. The combination of pale color from the new malts (aided by the Bohemian city of Plzenís remarkably soft water), noble hops and Bavarian-style lagering produced a clear, golden beer which caused a sensation. Improving transport and communications also meant that this new beer was quickly available throughout Central Europe, and its style was soon widely imitated. FOOD COMPLEMENTS: Works well as an aperitif and with salads, salmon, tuna and marbled meats

My first sip in over 3 years of this former pub only brew is a revelation. Straw yellow capped by a white head with good retention. Bready nose with ample flowery hop aroma. Taste is much of the same with a crisp cleansing bitterness level. Quite a fantastic beer, glad glbc made this a seasonal beer they bottled and shipped. My next request: independence ale. Thank you.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a clear straw color. Even for a pilsner, it looks a little light. The head - which required an aggressive pour, mind you - is a one finger white shade with a bubbly texture with decent retention. Good lacing is left behind, also. S: The first whiff reveals some noble hops along with a faint touch of corn. After that, it develops a really nice tone of stone fruits like peach and apricot, along with some flowery notes. Actually, itís kind of redolent of fruit punch. The aroma, if not spectacular, is nonetheless very promising. T: Itís immediately opened up with some grassy hop bitterness. This aforementioned quality isnít too vegetal, thankfully. The finish is pure bitter fruit punch with a side of floral hops. Great Lakesí house character among their lagers kick ass. It all adds up to one rock-solid pilsner. M: The piercing, bone dryness I like from my pilsners isnít quite here. Rather, itís a little sweeter, and slightly fuller bodied than the norm, but not so sweet or so thick as to kill drinkability. Itís still as crisp and clean as a mutha, with just enough carbonation to help it go down easy. O: Over a month past the best-by date, and itís still quite good. I could see this one kicking ass fresh; you bet Iíll seek this out in the future.

Sampled on tap at the brewhouse. A nicely well crafted brew with a mild hop palate and smooth malts. A brew that you can certainly enjoy on a warm summer day.

Floral nose, very nice bouquet. Grassy grainy palate, some body. Okay. Like a bit more of the German hops backbone.
