COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed in honor of Fred, a man of integrity and a master brewer who lived the American dream. A dark beer with a soft bite, Fred’s is brewed using a special de-bittered dark malt, fermented cold and lagered at least four weeks. A smooth very drinkable brew with light roastiness and a noble hop aroma.

Bottle, thanks Salwan! Black with a one finger head. Aroma is floral and yeast. Flavor is mostly non bitter dark malts and some yeastiness. Finish I yeast esters and short.

Sampled at GABF on 9-18-2010. Comes almost black with a thin head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Tastes of the roasted malts with some smoke. Some bitterness and somewhat thin. Good but not great.

Very rich aroma. Expected a bit more to it. Bit thin mouth feel. Alcohol up front when it shouldn’t have been. Overall a very good beer though. Definitely worth a 2nd growler.

Sampled at the brewery. Near solid black, ruby edges, creamy light tan head. Aroma of roast chocolate malt, floral hops. Taste is roasty, milky, some smoke. Very smooth and mild.

Bottle… Pitch black lager with a small, creamy, off-white head. Decent retention. The nose is a touch nutty and, unfortunately, gives off a warm perspiration-like note. Full-bodied and lightly creamy with medium carbonation. The roasty, carbonous, medium bitter flavor also hints at a vinous, tawny port-like component. Nutty, roasty, moderately bitter finish. Kudos to Skyview for sending this beer my way!

Draft. Best I’ve tasted yet from Great Northern. Plenty of roasty character, a bit of mocha, no metallic pr soapy character. Some sweet fudgy/toffee character and a bit of port/wine character in the mouthfeel, along with a bit of fruit. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Probably the standout offering in Great Northern’s lineup. All in all not a bad schwarz, roasted malt character, dry finish.

On draught at the brewpub in Whitefish, Montana. Pours a near opaque dark brown brew with a thin off-white head that slowly dissipates to a fine film and good lacing. Aroma of dark roasted chocolate malt, some almonds, and a touch of coffee. Taste is smooth, creamy, full bodied with a smokey dark malt falvor. Finish is smooth, creamy following by a thin flowery hop bitter aftertaste.

Surprisingly good. There is a light malt aroma, but flavor has surprisingly smoke. Not much else to say about about it; medium body. Simple but solid.

Shared by Skyview. Aroma was very light of chocolate. The dark, almost black color with a thin white head. Tasted of malts and with a faint smoked touch as well. A touch watery and thin on the palate, but not bad.
