3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at the brewpub, June 2014. Amber pour with a small khaki head, mild lacing. Malty aroma, caramel, toffee, a touch of breadiness and raisins, mild spicy hop bite. Okay flavor, malty, a touch of fruitiness, bready, caramel, perhaps a touch tinny. Not bad.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
can @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Hazy dark amber brown, ivory rim head, bands of lace. Taste is caramel malt with a slightly roasted edge. It goes through the palate unchanged, then adds light bitters in a long finish that sees a return of the malt.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nearly clear auburn pour with a 2 finger, creamy tan head. Aroma is cereal, caramel, bran muffin, bread, spicy and floral hops. Flavor is caramel, toast and nutty notes up front, then toffee, husky grain, sweet vegetal notes, a little grass, spicy and prairie floral hops. Light to medium body with a neutral to chewy entry, light to medium, blanketing carbonation and slightly more dry, slightly juicy finish. Good stuff overall.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2014 Can. Murky reddish brown pour with a beige head. Aroma is steamed veggies and a bit of toffee. Similar taste but I kinda dig the taste, whereas the aroma isn’t all that good. Decent bit of heft to the body.

2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Canned. Dark red-brown with a smallish white head. There is a small amount of suspended particulates floating throughout, though most quickly settle to the bottom of the glass. Mild malt nose with some black pepper, cola, and mild vegetable soup. Vegetal notes follow through into the flavor with clove and black peppery spiciness, very mild smoke and mild-to-moderate caramels. Watery palate underneath some prickly carbonation. Just not very good. I’m a huge M*A*S*H fan, so I got the reference the first time I visited the Great River brewery and saw the signage on the wall. I really wanted to like this. If they changed to cans to be M*A*S*H or Army themed I’d buy one more just for the can, but I sadly wouldn’t buy again for the beer.
