an odd brown color with a dark beige head, moderate to heavy carbonation. there was rye in the aroma and flavor and it was heavy on the caramel maltiness. not sure of all the hop varieties used in this one, but i detected simcoe which was confirmed by someone behind the bar. beer was thick and chewy almost cloyingly sweet. ok, but a bit sloppy and didn’t seem to have a real identity.

Pours dark but clear amber with tan head. Aroma is very hoppy, pine and citrus. Medium body, prett light carbonation. Lots of caramel malt flavor, some rye spice, and piney and floral hops. Really well balanced, good stuff.

A dark brown pour with some reddish highlights and a big, tan head. The aroma is a little burnt with notes of rye, ash, and mild pine. The medium body has an oily texture with average carbonation. The taste bitter all the way through and finishes dry.

Great river brewery hopapotamus - pours a very dark, clear, chestnut brown with red edges and a bubbly light brown head. The nose is interesting, it’s a bit light but there is some notes of chocolate and roasted malts. There is a nice rye spice between the malt and hop transition as oily, resinous, citric hop. The taste has the pronounced rye with chocolate malts accompanying. Fairly roasted with a lighter hop presence than the nose. Basically just a light citrus and faint bitterness. A bit thick and syrupy with a lighter carb but soft feel. Pretty enjoyable balance here.

Pretty malty and flat out of a cask at the brewery. The hops are there, but the are not driving the beer. Friendly folks, though, and I like the keg I got.

Can. Pours dark copper brown in color with a big tight khaki soapy head that fades to a film and shows lacing. Aroma is piny bread and malt. Taste is very malt forward with rye and a bitterness with pine and spruce. Palate is full and sticky with a dry finish.

Reddish-brown pour with a dark tan head. Aroma is citrus hops and a little rye. Taste is nice malt backbone with a citrus hop aftertaste. The rye flavor comes out at the end. ok lacing.

Pours a deep garnet with a 2 finger beige head that has great retention and leaves pretty good lacing. Aroma is big on citrus hops, a little tropical fruit and a little, earth, chocolate and rye. Mostly the hops coming through though. Flavor is earthy rye, caramel, light chocolate, autumn leaves, citrus, a little pine and leafy hops. Palate is medium bodied, creamy on entry, medium carbonation, slightly slick, off dry finish. This stuff is pretty intense on the rye flavor. Good though. As it warms it get a little boozy, probably well above it’s ideal drinking temperature though.

Gift from pepsiedcan. This beer presents itself in a full 16oz pint can, clocking in at a whopping 9% ABV. Pours a dark ruby color with a huge off white head consisting of fine bubbles. Aroma is of caramel, biscuit and some muted hop notes. Initial taste is very malt forward with bittering hops, but it fails to deliver on its hop-a-potamus promise. Instead, it relies on malted rye to get its point across. Standing on its own, this is still a solid brew, but not the hop bomb I was expecting. Decent.

FURLYSURIOUS (185) - Orono, Minnesota, USA - APR 19, 2012
Pours a copper red with a healthy cap of tan head. Slow, steady beading and good lacing. The nose is earthy with layers of citrus, like fresh squeezed tangerine all smothered in caramel. There’s quite a pine bite on the tongue that transitions through rye and toasted grains. Drawn out, bitter afterburn. Overall, this beer isn’t perfect but it’s complex enough to keep things exciting.

Can. Dark pour with a cream head. Big hoppy and rye nose and taste. Really nice brew.
