3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Skyview (4880) - Papoose Jct, USA - MAY 7, 2009
Backlog: On draught during the Winterfest 2009 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Pours a dark copper/brown colored brew with a thin off-white head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of roasted dark malt, wood, a touch of vanilla and sweet pear. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of roasted dark malt, chocolate, sweet pear and a touch of vanilla. Finish is semi-sweet with a lingering pear/chocolate aftertaste with no bitterness. Quite interesting.
1.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20 Alopex (55) - Crystal, Minnesota, USA - DEC 11, 2009
Tried this last Dec/Jan at the brewpub. It sounded like a novel brew so I gave it a whirl. Deep black, blacker than pitch, darker than night color was beautiful. The aroma was of chocolate and pears. Everything that was good about this beer up to now was undone by the taste. The horrible horrible overly sweet candied pear taste. Vile and almost undrinkable. If overly sweet candied fruit and sugar are your thing -great. Otherwise stay away.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 JK (3506) - Uptown, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - FEB 9, 2009
Pretty good for the style, what can you do with a porter? It should probably be a fruit beer, because the pear is prominent. Pear in the aroma and flavor. Sweet with some sugar, but not like canned pears, which I expected. Light brown color.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BVery (2557) - Burnsville, Minnesota, USA - JAN 25, 2009
TAP: at Great Waters (1.24.2009). Deep mahogany pour, wood & pear on the nose, chocolate/barleywine flavor. For a porter, this had a lot of wine character.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 BDR (2534) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - JAN 5, 2009
An incredibly dark beer with a rich chocolate aroma blended with one of the best pear aromas I’ve ever encountered. A similar flavor with a dry oatmeal character to it. The pear was superbly done in this one.
