LtJudge (353), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Apr 25, 2008 Pours a dark brown color with a thick and creamy tan head. A wonderful huge coffe aroma dominated the nose. Hints of chocolate, and roasted malts in there as well. Flavor is of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and hints of vanilla peeking through as well. Great lacing on this one as well Excellent brew!
jf_english (146), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 2, 2008 On tap at the Whistling Swan Restaurant in Door Co. Wisconsin (Fish Creek). Bought some of the coffee earlier in the day at the Luna Cafe and figured the beer must be pretty good. Lived up to the expectations (so did dinner by the way- if in Door Co and want a nice meal, this is the place). Anyways, back to the beer....On tap, jet black pour with a cappuccino-foam head. Sweet cream aroma with coffee notes and roasted nuts. Taste is similar, coffee, sweet cream, and roasted nut / cashew. Smooth and delicious. notalush (1971), Rawn-kawn-kohma, New York, USA Jun 23, 2008 Nitro pour - huge, lasting nitro head - a really potent combination of coffee and roasted malt in the aroma - very smooth and creamy mouthfeel - strong roast and bitter tobacco leaf - it’s hard to tell how much of the roasty flavor is from the coffee, and how much is from roasted malt (very well-integrated flavors) - nice, full mouthfeel, despite the light, quaffable nature of the style (I think this is a dry stout) - a great coffee stout. phishpond417 (1162), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 30, 2008 This beer poured beautifully in the class a deep dark black colour with reddish hints, full bodied, with aromas of mocha chocolate and coffee. Taste was delicious with choco-coffee flavors all the way through. Very creamy on the palate. Delightful indeed! BeerBelcher (698), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Dec 14, 2007 Hinterland has opened a location in Milwaukee’s 3rd Ward, which I visited yesterday (and sampled this brew). I thought this stout was quite dry, but nitrogen injection made it rather cream-y and dry at the same time. Quite pleasant.
Appearance was great; the body of the beer was black but thin in consistency. Nitrogenated, so the head did that weird inversion where the bubbles appear to be going down instead of up. Aroma was a bit roasty, but I got a substantial Yoohoo (chocolate drink) aroma, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Mouthfeel was quite smooth thanks to the nitrogen injection, and very dry. Despite this dry-ness, mouthfeel was still rather creamy. Flavor was dry (no real sweetness) and roasty but really quite mild. Without the nitrogen, I’m not sure how impressed with this beer I would’ve been, but as it was served to me it was quite nice.
I’d recommend this beer.
I had this on-tap at the Hinterland location on Erie St in Milwaukee. Hinterland doesn’t brew at this location, and the Hinterland beer served there is shipped down from Green Bay (as I understand it).
