Pours lightly hazy caramel brown with a thin offwhite head and specks of lace. Smells big and caramelly malty with a bit of alcohol, slight roast. Tastes sweet and malty, with some dark fruit and a little alcohol. Sweet. Medium body, mellow carbonation.

Bottle. Brown pour with tan head. Infected? Fruity tart, yeast, Brett aromas, saison. Herbal, fruit, Brett tart notes. Some oxidation. Not what it should be, but I probably like it better this way.

12oz bottle thanks to Toby. Pours out a mahogany topped with small head. Nose is caramel toffee. Taste is more of the sweetness caramel toffee sweetness.

Mahogany brown in color... Aroma of peated malts, smoke, tobacco, humidor... Flavor is fairly thin initially, smoke, peated malts and tobacco, would be pretty bland if it weren't for the barrel aging... Lots of peat on finish... Minimal carbonation, almost like drinking scotch...Decent

"nice use of peat, along with a tobacco aspect to the aroma and flavor that i really dug. if it weren’t for those things, this would be uninspired, but it turned out a nice malt bomb if a little thin."

Aroma and flavor had some oxidation and while sometimes I think oxidation can be nice in certain styles (including scotch ales), because this was an ale of what thought was on the "delicate" side, the oxidation didn’t help it. But, still a really nice beer.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2015 September 11th, 2013 - A beer of this calibre, and at this price ($17.99, California) is typically out of my range. But it’s my birthday month, and a luxurious beer is better than a cake at my age. The Highway 78 Scotch Ale is a promising way to celebrate. The style is one of my favorite, and the bottle demonstrates all the pedigrees of an expensive collaboration. Once poured it looks a great deal like a pint of Coca-Cola. Large bubbles stick to the side of the glass, sitting just below the thinnest of mottled heads, and the body is that familiar semi-clear liquid that we’ve all seen splashed, swirled and slurped in a million Coke commercials. The aroma is dominated by hickory, hickory smoke, and wood, almost so as to snell like Virginian pipe tobacco. The hickory notes return on the tongue where they present as slightly sour. A mild to medium weight palate is closer to a flat carbonation than I would have expected, but the silence of the mouthfeel reveals other subtle flavors like juniper, blueberries, black pepper, and beef jerky. The traditional caramel sugars of the scotch ale don’t appear here, nor does the whiskey burn of the barrel, but these are replaced with new and interesting flavors - a wonderful birthday gift.
September 8th, 2012 - Also on display at Green Flash’s fair weather festival was a collaborative scotch ale - strangely dark for the drinking environment, but a sticky, boozy addition nonetheless. It has all the smells and scents of a good scotch ale: dark malt, brown sugar, caramel, apple and pumpkin spice, and a heavy whiff of alcohol. And the flavor has it too, with a heavy emphasis on burnt caramel and cacao nibs, giving this brew a whole spectrum of sweet flavors that it can play on: dark fruits to chocolate and back again. At this point in my craft beer drinking career, this is a new and novel approach to the scotch ale, with a nicely balanced level of alcohol that satisfies the drinkers and keeps excessive sugars at bay.
