COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

Bottle at Craig?s house. Very black with a fairly small head. Not much gas. Skunky. Not my thing.

Bottle. A big, dense, light beige head forms over a more or less black body. Spiced nose with ginger and some cardamom. Roasted, coffee-ish malts and a pleasant fruityness. Roasted malts, ginger, bubble gum, grassy hints and some bitterness in the flavor. Lightly funky, and that goes for the aroma too. Full body, nice carbonation and quite dry. Lasting roasted finish with the spices shining through. Spearmint too. Sure a nice one, but I’d like to see the saison yeast more evident. 130516

(22oz bomber) dark brown, cloudy, soapy tan bubbles. Nose of Brett, cranberry, roasty, spices. Taste is funky, cranberry, sawdust, roasty, weird fruity and roasty combo, medium body, slick palate.

Rating Backlog #2. What the heck is a Black Saison? Is it, similarly to a black IPA, a saison that is kind of like a Porter. Let’s ask Mr. Owl. 1, 2, 3, <crunch>, 3. End non-sequitur. Poured dark with dark brown head. Flavor is minty with a medium body. Trappeze Pub - Athens, GA

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with minimal orange highlights and an enormous creamy brown head that left great lacing. The aroma was dryish, malty and a bit toasty with faint floral hops, a bit of funk and brett. The flavor was tart and bitter with roasty malts, coffee, burnt toast, vague fruity hops, floral hops and a bit of brett. Medium length finish and body. Ok.

P: Black slightly transparent body with mahogany tint. A massive mountain if rocky brown ice cream float head. Great retention that settles to a creamy crown. 3 rings of lacing cling to the sides. S: Roasted malt, cocoa nibs, dark fruits, cumin, cardamom, black pepper, clove and faint licorice. Earthy farmhouse yeast and roasted grains. Aroma is similar to the spring time gain laundry detergent. T/M: Lots of char in the taste with a bouquet of floral hops, dark cocoa, chalky yeast and a bite of cayenne pepper midway through the swish. Sweetness from burnt molasses, brown sugar and dark fruits. Medium-full body boasting zesty carbonation. Finish is semi dry with lingering spice, wild onions and leaves a dirty grainy feel behind. O: Super complex nose with a great a roasted earthy spiced profile that delivers sugary sweetness to bring balance. The aroma is the main attraction. Im not a huge fan of dark saisons but this one is pretty decent.
