Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

On tap at Kinsale Public House, Boston. Big foamy head with lots of lacing. Pours black. Nose is roasted and yeast. Aromas of burnt malt, yeast, and lemon. Bitter tasting with some fruity sweetness in the background. Reasonably low carbonation. Nice beer.

On tap. Black pour, cream head. Nose is cinnamon, spice, yeast, dry, and fruits. Very smooth on the palate, spiced gum drops, light yeast, earth, and an easy finish.

Hansen (8291) - Assentoft, DENMARK - MAR 30, 2013
Almost black coloured, has an off-white head, lasting. Spicy aroma, peppermint, toothpaste-like, upleasent. Spicy, malty and unpleasent flavor. Creamy texture.

EithCubes (5458) - New Jersey, USA - MAR 27, 2013
A Black Saison bottled 08/07/12. Nose loaded with herbs and spices, a veil that canít be penetrated by any hops or malt. Main offender is toothpaste mint, but there are strong clove, anise-y licorice, and rose hip components. Some Brett and actual horse blanket. Deep brown-black with a jiggly, dense light brown head. Taste has a strong initial burst of extremely rubbery bitterness, the aforementioned spices/herbs are there but diminished, more black pepper instead, some mingled citrus peel and super-heavy horse blanket and pretty distinct footy/socky flavor. Paper, faint grain. Drybone scrape of the tongue (scrimshaw?) with some musky aftertones, sage and even some basil, chocolate and light roast, dash of coriander, pleasant black patent. Has a faint gruit component, maybe some myrtle/gale? Relatively smooth feel, full body. Super strange and love the complexity, a good and rather didactic pint but Iím sure itíll be a one-time thing for me.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with nice thick brown head. Aroma is yeast, spices, hops and a bit roasty. Flavor is malt, licorice, spices, mint, hops, roasty. Slightly roasty dry aftertaste.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours a dark black with a burgundy hue. Aroma is fruity but also possesses a peppery/soapy element. Flavour was like a dark peppery barnyard yeast. Pretty dry and medium body finish. Interesting and challenging combination, but not as good as their other stuff.

Pours quite dark with a nice tanned head. Smells of yeast, fruity esters, brett and malts. Moderate sweet, nice touch of brett and a fruity character from the yeasts. Moderate bitter finish. A very nice saison; of this black kind i donít know much, but i know i liked this one

From a 355ml bottle on 24/3/2013. Pours close to balck with a medium head. Has a curious aroma which is dominated by licorice with a touch of spice. The flavour is curious as well, with bitter roasty notes, some sweet dark fruit, more licorice, and a lingering spicy finish. An unusual and quite interesting brew without quite hitting the bullseye.

Ughsmash (7506) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 23, 2013
Bottled. Poured deep brown with a dense, creamy, well-retained dark tan head. The aroma picked up a whole lot of juniper and spruce with toasted chocolate malts supporting.. bright and interesting. The flavor found slightly sour juiniper plus white pepper and cloves throughout.. black, roasty malts supported.. finished with a big spicy yeast impression and residual roast. Medium-bodied, dry, and kind of sour on the palate.. this was OK, but didnít entirely work.
