Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

Bottle. This is a pretty sour saison with an almost funky background note. I almost wonder if this is infected.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Tom Cís place. Thanks Tom C. Black-colored with a nice tan head. Aroma of lots of spices, licorice, some fruitiness, some chocolate and coffee. Sweetish flavor, spicy, with caramel, licorice, a light sourish note, fruitiness, coffee, some chocolate and a drier bitterish finish. Medium-bodied.

"Dark saison. Very very up front herbal nose, almost menthol like in quality. Flavor similar with some dark roast and lite funk. I really dug this but probably couldnít drink a ton..."

Transfer from BA review on 1-27-13- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance ĖServed a black colored brew with a small tan head. The head faded quite fast, leaving a nice amount of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell Ė The aroma is heaviest of a roasted malt mixed with spices of coriander and clove. Some pepper aromas as well as some funky aroma are mixed in as well giving it a odd roasted and funked saison kind of smell. Taste Ė The flavor begins with a strong dose of roasted malt mixed with a small amount of a citrus taste. Spices of pepper and clove are rather heavy up front. While the spices dwindle toward the end they remain ever present in the taste. A herbal and grassy flavor comes to the tongue at the middle to the end. These flavors take the taste to its end where a roasted and lightly bittered grass/herb flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The body of the beer was on the medium side in terms of its creaminess with a carbonation level that was average as well. Both were a good compromise for the roasted body of the beer and the more funky and spicy flavors. Overall Ė A fairly interesting beer in my opinion. While the flavors donít meld perfectly at all times they make for an interesting combination and style. While it isnít one I would go to on any real occasion, it is a good one to try.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2014 Bottle at home. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is spicy - coriander and clove. I could go either way on this one. I donít really like spiced beers. Tastes like a winter ale but has definite yeastiness. But tastes too much like cleaning solution. Not sure what to do about this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The aroma is herbal to the point of being medicinal with the Belgium yeast coming through. Lots spiciness & tongue tingling followed by the dark malts that gives a stouty finish. Rated by BrewTom

Bottle from Giant Eagle Market in UA. Black pour with a huge tan head that take forever to recede and leaves a loose web of lacing. Aroma is spicy - clove and cardamom maybe? also yeast and floral. Tastes are caramel, light anise, roasty, ash, fruity, dark bread. Strange mix. Little menthol - mint vibe. Dry in the finish. Hmm...
