Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

Pours a deep almost black with a tan bubbly/creamy head that left sticky lacing. Aroma of molasses, star anise, peppery belgian yeast character, hints of chocolate and some citrusy notes. Flavor of light molasses notes, dark chocolate, star anise and some other various spices. Spicy belgian yeast character and nice and dry like a saison should be.

Had on tap at Ale House. Pours a blackish toned hue with a fluffy beige head, started two to three fingers then gradually sank to half a pinky. Smells and tastes of ash/cigarette smoke, mold, leaves, hops and yeast. Ends with plastic and strange spices. ...okay.

Bottle, 12C. Black with a very large light tan head that collapses to a rocky inch. Extravagant lacing. Aroma of spices (cardamon, thyme, nutmeg, white pepper), oranges, burnt toffee. The spices are not subtle at all. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Sweet singed dark sugars, citrus, firm bitterness, galumphing spices. Finish is dry and very pleasantly bitter with the spices settling in nicely right at the end. Really liked the mouthfeel on this with the dry and bitter finish, but wished the spices stuck out a little less.

Dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma of spice, Belgian yeast and fruit. Fruit sweetness with spice and a Belgian yeast closing. Very nice beer!

Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Nose and taste of herbs, herbs and herbs - fennel, cardamom, rosemary, sage, thyme and roasted malt. Medium body. Too herbal for me.

Bottled. A black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, bread, caramel, and a bit of spices. The flavor is sweet with notes of cardemomme, yeast, roasted malt, and bread, leading to roasted finish. The style doesn’t impress me.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with fluffy tan head. Aroma is black pepper and roasted malt. Taste is fennel, rosemary, and Belgian yeast. Very interesting. I really enjoyed it but I’m not sure why.

Bottle. Pours a near-black color with a very thick light tan head. Nose is hugely floral and somewhat sour with some great spice notes. Taste is not nearly as outspoken as the nose implies, but has nice bits of spice with a hint of sour in there.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/7/2012. Pours fairly pitch black color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense dark khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of roasted malt, coriander, clove, pepper, dark chocolate, lime, light smoke, toast, ginger, herbal, and earthy yeast spiciness. Nice and unique aromas with good strength and complexity; lots of spices noted, was hoping for more roasted balance in the nose. Taste of dark chocolate, roasted malt, lime, coriander, clove, sage, pepper, toast, light smoke, ginger, raisin, light coffee, herbal, and earthy yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of roasted malt, toast, coriander, clove, pepper, sage, herbal, light coffee, lime, and earthy spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Good flavor balance and complexity; with a solid malt/spiciness balance; and minimal cloying spices after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a slightly creamy and very crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a good black saison style. Good balance and complexity of flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable and unique offering.

Draft at Proof. Black pour with a frothy tan head. Spicy, bubble gum yeast, licorice and notes of chocolate in the aroma. Slightly creamy body with average carbonation that has flavors of licorice, cocoa, yeast spice, white pepper, hints of citrus and some earthiness. Pretty good and a lot different than the other black Saisons that I’ve had.
