Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

Pours brown with a tan head. Aroma is spice, yeast and a bit of funk. Flavor is roast malt, spice, licorice, minty, with a bitter finish. Interesting, but not a beer that I greatly enjoyed.

Iíve had draught servings of this a few times and always enjoyed them, this rating is for a bottle.

The draught samples always seem a dark brown, the bottle seems to be a black color, Iím guessing itís because Iím pouring the bottle into a larger glass than we serve the beer in at the bar. Either way itís dark, itís got a big fluffy tan head, and the beer leaves a lot of lacing on the glass.

Wow, the aroma is much more exciting from this bottled sample, floral, fruity, & funky. Black peppercorns are a the most dominant spice. This smells great, if I were blindfolded I would guess it was saison, but I hardly pick up any roasty or dark fruit notes that would lead me to believe this was as darkly colored as it is.

The flavor is maybe a bit more spice focused than I would like from this style, but at the same time the spices work together and I do like the flavor of the beer. Plenty of black peppercorn, mild licorice, lots of cooking spice. Where this one shines is the bitterness, itís so pleasant a good marriage of fruity and earthy hops, a nice earthy bitterness, a mild roasty bitterness... all around itís a dry complex and tasty beer.

This is much better out of the bottle than off draught, the draught version I found to be a tad soapy and a little overspiced both in the aroma and flavor, bottle conditioning must have been the key to greatness here. Iíve never so much cared for the concept of "Black Saison" but this one seems to fit the bill fairly well.

On tap at Jerryís. Pours a clear near black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of light Belgian yeast with a hint off light fruit and a strong dark grain backing. Flavor starts with roasted malts with dark grains and a hint of Belgian yeast.

Drank from large bottle served in short pilsner. Aroma is yeasty and sour - very complex with some spiciness. Dark black oily color almost looks like Turkish coffee. Very rich "toasty" flavor, also a bit sour. Dry clean palate ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Drank at home from 22oz bottle poured into small pilsner glass. Aroma- smells like liquid black licorice. Appearance- dark like stout but thinner consistency. Light head with very thick lacing. Taste- call me crazy but all i get is black licorice. If you like black licorice then you will love this. Unfortunatelly i do not. Hard for me to stomach but thats just me. Palate- malty and licorice again for lack of better words. Overall- not my type

Draft at Tria. Pours a deep brown, nearly black with tan head. A lot of spice to this but not over the top. Anise, pepper, clove, possibly some mint in there

Bottle. Pours a deep brown with a massive head and aromas of bitter dark malt, anise and clove or allspice. Flavor is heavy with the bitter malts and anise/licorice. As it airs and warms, an almost Brett-like funk comes through strongly and starts to dominate the late palate. This is interesting and I find myself enjoying it more and more as it sits out.
