12oz bottle. Opaque brown-black body. Big, creamy, steady beige head. Spicy herbal aroma, but also heavily chocolate laced. Sort of like a Black IPA in the syrupy specialty malt sweetness, but has the underlying funky, tangy aspects of the Saison yeast. Though it has a nice effervescence and a fluffy body, I don’t really find the flavor profile appealing. Cloyingly sweet, a unique offering I suppose.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Vestergaard (113) - Aarhus C, DENMARK - APR 3, 2013
Black but with a lively light brown head. Smells like potential: barnyard, Roasted malts. citrusy. I expected more roast from the taste, while it is more like caramel. Quite fizzy. tastes pretty good.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 RasmusOtt (876) - Aalborg, DENMARK - APR 3, 2013
Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of toffee malts, caramel, mellow cake, hops, sweeter yeast, some anis and other sweeter spices. Taste of weak roast, sweeter malts, spices, some fresh hops, dry basement yeast and liquorice. Interesting brew.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 jgb9348 (4025) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - APR 2, 2013
Deep dark brown coloured body with only the slightest bit of light coming through at the very bottom of the glass, all with a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of yeast, bread, grass, plastic/petroleum, hay and a hint of light herbal hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and herbal hops up front with a distinct yeast strain, some light roasted malt notes and a perceived bready flavour. Aftertaste shows a large grassy and herbal note with some hop bitterness, a little roasty flavour and the smallest amount of sweetness. Overall, an interesting and relatively unique beer - even amongst black saisons - the yeast is distinct and the grassy and herbal notes are well defined, just not amazingly flavoured themselves. Interesting to try and I’d recommend it to all, however the price stands in the way. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 24-October-2012 for US$3.99 sampled at home in Washington on 02-April-2013.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 EithCubes (4233) - New Jersey, USA - MAR 27, 2013
A Black Saison bottled 08/07/12. Nose loaded with herbs and spices, a veil that can’t be penetrated by any hops or malt. Main offender is toothpaste mint, but there are strong clove, anise-y licorice, and rose hip components. Some Brett and actual horse blanket. Deep brown-black with a jiggly, dense light brown head. Taste has a strong initial burst of extremely rubbery bitterness, the aforementioned spices/herbs are there but diminished, more black pepper instead, some mingled citrus peel and super-heavy horse blanket and pretty distinct footy/socky flavor. Paper, faint grain. Drybone scrape of the tongue (scrimshaw?) with some musky aftertones, sage and even some basil, chocolate and light roast, dash of coriander, pleasant black patent. Has a faint gruit component, maybe some myrtle/gale? Relatively smooth feel, full body. Super strange and love the complexity, a good and rather didactic pint but I’m sure it’ll be a one-time thing for me.
