Editor’s Note: The 6.5% abv European version is listed under St Feuillien

Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

12 fl oz bottle. Black pour, large cream-white head with good lace. Far more like a spiced dark ale rather than a Saison with star anise aromas and traces of coffee on top of malty base. Quite light bodied and easy drinking.

(22oz bomber) Purchased at Viti Liquor and Lager in Vancouver. Pours jet black with a highly lofty beige head. Nose of hard English candy. Almost medicinal - interesting citrus and wit base gets blasted by cotton candy, caramel and toffee. Not terribly palatable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Pours a deep black color with a small brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some earthy notes. Taste is also dominated by rustic malt with light roastiness and some light funky notes. Body is medium with light prickly carbonation.

Bottle at home. Black pour. Good beige head. Hops, chocolate and fresh notes in the aroma. Good coffee taste, yeast and hops. Nice combo. Could use some more body.

Pours a pitch black with a huge off-white head with decent retention and great lace. Really, really foamy - took forever to pour a full glass. Aroma reminds me of Speculaas cookies - spicy, sweet, and also a sort of strange cheap cola aroma too. Curiously watery, ash, burnt coffee taste. Not rich, but potent. Astringent hop finish, spices difficult to distinguish but perhaps allspice, nutmeg? Thin, watery body with aggressive carbonation. Not really well-executed, plenty of unbalanced flavour.
