3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
0.355l bottle shared with Inbreak @ ōltorget. This is a deep dark brown one with a small but really heavy lacing off-white head that ends up as a lump in the middle of the glass. It smells like caught syrup. Loaded with herbs and spices, some licorice, fennel, anise, peppermint and spice cake. Itís definitely a interesting aroma on this flavorful spice bomb. Itís a bit minerally in the taste, dark and again spicy, but mostly minerals. It has a dark side, but itís more a nice dark side - not a dark dark side of course. (cause itís a beer) some grassy acidity is also tingling on my palate. Noticing that itís surprisingly easy to drink, cause the while glass is pretty darn near gone already and it not even all that thirsty anymore. Subtle hints of both anise, cardamom and nuts in the finish is. Light dry tongue left in the mouth after the swallow. Quite original. 24.05.2013

The licorice puts it out of my normal stomping grounds for a beer. Nice peppery flavor but on the hot day that it was in London, this is not something I would have a second bottle of. Nice head retention and good color but not my cup of beer.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black saison...how weird it is. Rubbery bret yeast, black licorice and crushed peppercorns. Jet black with permanent, soft tan head. Strange of more licorice, jagermeister style, and scorched malts. Just a touch of vanilla and other spice;unfortunately not forward enough to make a mark. Body is quite thin for such a dark beer, not even the weight of a schwarz lager. Not sure what to think. Green Flash has the third best average score from me among brewers Iíve sampled. This should bring them down a peg or two.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
The final beer of this tasting was Green Flashís take on the Black Saison, their Friendship Brew at 5.7%. I heard from Dominique Friart last week that they followed the same recipe but they must have done more than use different equipment! These beers were quite different, I think that the hopping schedule at the least must have been different...
Green Flashís version was a bit darker in color than St-Feuillienís but had tons more aroma! An interesting peppery/spicy aroma wafted out of my glass. The flavor was pretty bitter & much more hop forward with some pine, pepper & spice notes. The bitterness pretty much masked the malts which didnít do it for me.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black, tan head.Spotty lace.
Spicey aroma with citrusy fruit. Bright. Floral perfumey.
Malty front with strong citrus, pepper, floral complexity. Good body but lightish finish. Some woody dryness. Stong citrusy bittering with pepper.Roast malt is hidden from the complex yeast/hops but noticable.

1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Anise, mint, and washing machine detergent aroma. Too much carb. Dark fruit, black licorice, hardened yeast, plenty of malt. Bleh.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. This was a damn good beer and will have me keeping my eyes peeled for other black saisons. Great looking beer in the glass followed by a depth of flavor different from a more standard Saison.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
THOUGHTS: A very different take on a saison in general, but even different for a balck saison. Very interesting and extremely different. Bonus points for lacing.
TECHNICAL: Poured a very dark brown that was basically opaque, black with a large, off-white head that mostly, but very slowly diminished, leaving excellent lacing and then some. The aroma had moderate roasted and burnt malts; moderate piney hops; slight vanilla; licorice; cola; anise; and maybe mint. The initial flavor was slightly sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was lightly sweet and moderately bitter with a fairly long duration. There was roasted malt, burnt malt, slight chocolate, coffee, caramel, licorice, anise, slight vanilla, citrus and earthy hops; pine hops. The medium body was oily and then dry with very fizzy carbonation and a dry and slightly metallic finish.
