3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, rocky, brown, fully lasting.
Body is black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of sage, menthol, earth/moss, fennel seed, ajowan/thyme, light note of peppermint.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Well, the nose is quite neat (reminiscent of a Fantome brew, e.g. Strange Ghost or Black Ghost), and it looks fantastic. Alas, in the mouth it suffers the same way many of the "American Fantome" (Jolly Pumpkin) beers do...itís too sour and attenuated to be much fun to drink. Yes, a saison should be dry, but it shouldnít be parching...it should be *quenching*...itís a fine line, Iíll admit, but all too often beers like Madrugada Obscura or Bam Noire have virtually no sugars left and are both sour and bitter to boot. Balance is key, and these brews donít quite have it. Kinda thin for the 5.7%, but itís creamy. I wanted to like this a lot more based on the interesting (albeit spice-heavy) nose, but alas.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A 2012 vintage thatís seemed to have aged perfectly. At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Black as midnight with an inch of rocky, beige foam atop that holds and leaves a thick and messy lace. Strong berry sherbet and eucalyptus and tea-tree oil notes on the nose amongst a blend of mace, nutmeg, cinnamon and clove spices. On the palate it is spice driven, dry and creamy with a malt, hop, wood and spice finish. Slight smoke, camphor, eucalypt, bitter orange peel. mace, dark chocolate, clove and twiggy bark. Really mouthfilling with a solid malt and US hop base. Lengthy bitterness that melds everything. There is a touch of nettles and rosemary; this has a ridiculous amount of complexity going for it at three years old. Somewhat medicinal. Well rounded and curious. A herbal aperitif. Delicious and original. (1pint, 6fl.Oz, Bottled 31/07/12, The Intíl Beer Shop, W. Leederville)

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark brown almost black with a big beige head. Aroma is cherries, prunes, grapes, yeast, caramel, chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, some red fruits. Bitter aftertaste. Good but the fruitness donít combine with the roasted malt flavour. Strange Saison...

2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
Ugh. This was a terrible beer. The only good thing about this beer was the aroma. Chai spices with not much else. The pour was a stout like dark brown with a one finger tan head. Taste was pretty bad. Too much going on and it didnít work. Strong spices, dark roasted malt made it a little bitter. Yeast and malt were drowned out by the crazy spices. Finished the beer, but it was difficult

Saison?! So confused. This beer pours dark with a chocolate milk head. Smells and tastes like thin mint Girl Scout cookies. So weird!

Takes a lot for me to dislike a saison but make it a straight black licorice bomb and that will happens. Dont advertise a secret blend of spices if it really just tastes like anise. Warn people.
