3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, rocky, brown, fully lasting.
Body is black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of sage, menthol, earth/moss, fennel seed, ajowan/thyme, light note of peppermint.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Well, the nose is quite neat (reminiscent of a Fantome brew, e.g. Strange Ghost or Black Ghost), and it looks fantastic. Alas, in the mouth it suffers the same way many of the "American Fantome" (Jolly Pumpkin) beers do...itís too sour and attenuated to be much fun to drink. Yes, a saison should be dry, but it shouldnít be parching...it should be *quenching*...itís a fine line, Iíll admit, but all too often beers like Madrugada Obscura or Bam Noire have virtually no sugars left and are both sour and bitter to boot. Balance is key, and these brews donít quite have it. Kinda thin for the 5.7%, but itís creamy. I wanted to like this a lot more based on the interesting (albeit spice-heavy) nose, but alas.

Bottle. This is a pretty sour saison with an almost funky background note. I almost wonder if this is infected.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle sample at a tasting at Tom Cís place. Thanks Tom C. Black-colored with a nice tan head. Aroma of lots of spices, licorice, some fruitiness, some chocolate and coffee. Sweetish flavor, spicy, with caramel, licorice, a light sourish note, fruitiness, coffee, some chocolate and a drier bitterish finish. Medium-bodied.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
"Dark saison. Very very up front herbal nose, almost menthol like in quality. Flavor similar with some dark roast and lite funk. I really dug this but probably couldnít drink a ton..."

Transfer from BA review on 1-27-13-
Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass
Appearance ĖServed a black colored brew with a small tan head. The head faded quite fast, leaving a nice amount of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell Ė The aroma is heaviest of a roasted malt mixed with spices of coriander and clove. Some pepper aromas as well as some funky aroma are mixed in as well giving it a odd roasted and funked saison kind of smell.
Taste Ė The flavor begins with a strong dose of roasted malt mixed with a small amount of a citrus taste. Spices of pepper and clove are rather heavy up front. While the spices dwindle toward the end they remain ever present in the taste. A herbal and grassy flavor comes to the tongue at the middle to the end. These flavors take the taste to its end where a roasted and lightly bittered grass/herb flavor is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body of the beer was on the medium side in terms of its creaminess with a carbonation level that was average as well. Both were a good compromise for the roasted body of the beer and the more funky and spicy flavors.
Overall Ė A fairly interesting beer in my opinion. While the flavors donít meld perfectly at all times they make for an interesting combination and style. While it isnít one I would go to on any real occasion, it is a good one to try.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2014 Bottle at home. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is spicy - coriander and clove. I could go either way on this one. I donít really like spiced beers. Tastes like a winter ale but has definite yeastiness. But tastes too much like cleaning solution. Not sure what to do about this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

crazy spicy and mysterious. But points for great color, beautiful foam, different beer and to get me into the Christmas spirit in February.
Cloves anise cinnamon flavor
Thick brown whipped cream.

The aroma is herbal to the point of being medicinal with the Belgium yeast coming through. Lots spiciness & tongue tingling followed by the dark malts that gives a stouty finish.

Bottle from Giant Eagle Market in UA. Black pour with a huge tan head that take forever to recede and leaves a loose web of lacing. Aroma is spicy - clove and cardamom maybe? also yeast and floral. Tastes are caramel, light anise, roasty, ash, fruity, dark bread. Strange mix. Little menthol - mint vibe. Dry in the finish. Hmm...

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle from The Party Source. Pours an opaque dark chocolate brown with a massive, frothy tan head that laces the glass heavily and settles unevenly. Aroma of florals, perfume, dark chocolate, roast, dust, earth, plum, dried berries, and spice. Flavor of roasted and toasted malts, earth, chocolate, subtle fruits, florals, and mild peppery spice. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry mouthfeel. Funkier in the nose than the flavor. Pretty nice beer; interesting dark saison.
