Commercial Description:
Our American-style Barleywine undergoes a three hour boil to intesify the caramel malts and the enormous Pacific Northwest hop charge. The result is a rich, estery brew with toffee notes and citrus hop flavors layered throughout. Enjoy this brew fresh today or lay it down for aging to see how the flavors of each vintage evolve.

Pale brown head. Clear red brown color. Some madeira and grass in the nose. Dark fruits prunes and raisins in the taste. Also some caramel and butter in the taste. May be a liitle bit too much hops for a barleywine.

Bottle shared by shegadeyo. Poured clear reddish brown color with an average off-white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt, earthy wood and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture. Medium to heavy sweet dark fruit flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. I would recommend this to a freind.

22oz bottle. Deep brown with a sticky beige head. Caramel and hoppy aroma with some sweet tropical fruits. The flavor is pretty similar to their imperial IPA, but with more caramel in the malt component. Just a ton of hops thrown in there. Quite hoppy, and the malts aren’t as clear as I would expect, but it works pretty well. Full and smooth body, but feels pretty light for the strength. A super green and hoppy barlywine, but refreshing to drink.

Bottled. Deep rubyish amber, mediumsized pinkish white head. Aroma is alcohol, raisins, plum, vanilla and wood. Flavour is quite much the same. Nicely balanced.

22oz from Sam’s, Durham. Okay, I’ve had this beer in the past and I recall it as a nicely hopped WC barleywine. It’s a deep ruby pour with a nice creamy head, and a pleasantly fruity/spicy hop-heavy aroma. But there’s this one quality, this one weird quality that cuts through and gives it an odd, and very nearly off-putting character. On the one hand, it’s a bit acidic; and on the other hand, it’s like rotting citrus or spoiled dough. There are enough good qualities in the beer to merit a decent rating, but man this is not up to snuff.

660ml bottle (Pikkulintu, Helsinki, Bitter and Sour 2008)
Huge hoppy aroma, a bit burnt malt too. Quite astringent hoppiness in the mouth - bites into the tongue. Massive hoppy taste too, and not too sweet, but still a bit sticky. Feels strong, but not actually alcoholic. Fairly well balanced for a big big beer.

Hazy brown coloured body with a huge tan head that lasts and lasts. Aroma of fresh malt, a bit of hops, straight sugar, toffee and a ton of yeast and tiny bit of spice. Full-bodied; Strong malty flavours roaming up front with a good sweetness following soon afterwards. Aftertaste shows some alcohol, toffee, potent nuts and a tiny bit of spice - mostly the sugars come through though. Overall, a potent and strong Barleywine that is pretty good. My only bad thing to say about this is - stop putting Barley Wine styled beers in 65 cL containers! I sampled this 65 cL (entirely too big) bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia during the summer of 2007 on 26-May-2008 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
