TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 29, 2007 Thanks to awaisanen for the trade. Pours a deep translucent ruby red amber with a large creamy tan head that sustained and left lots of lacing down the side of the glass. Aroma had loads of crystal malt, some dark fruits, fresh citrus hops with hints of vanilla and toasted bready malts. Flavor was up front caramel/toffee malt quickly followed by a moderate hop bitterness. Hop flavors of pine and grapefruit. Also picking up some dark fruits rather dry and no cloying sweetness like you would tend to get with some Barley Wines. A nice hoppy West Coast version of this monster of a beer. guzzler67 (1272), Hanover, Maryland, USA Mar 27, 2007 Clear, deep copper appearance with a large tan head and good lacing. Aroma is a blend of caramel malts and resinous hops. Full bodied mouthfeel with bready flavors interlaced with a sharp citrus hop taste. Dry, bitter, earthy finish golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Mar 26, 2007 Updated: May 5, 2007Bottle. Aroma of piney hops and some sweet malt. The malt dominates the flavor and leaves a peppery aftertaste along with the hop bitter aftertaste. Lots of throat warming, feels like more than 10%. alexanderj (2213), Chino Hills, California, USA Mar 26, 2007 Updated: Apr 20, 2007Poured a dark ruby-brown; large off white to light brown head. Good aroma, very strong, of pine, citrus, caramel malt and alcohol. This one is definitely a sipper; alcohol not even hidden a bit. Leads to some throat warming. Bitter ending, follows a huge caramel malt beginning. Fruity throughout. I liked it, but would not be able to drink this too often. Just so strong and powerful. Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 24, 2007 On tap at Mad Mex, Robinson. Mild alcoholic estery aroma. Fruity, mild acetone or ethyl acetate, very aromatic and addictive but odd. Fumes, a lot of fumes. Deep brown-amber clear with a bit of haze. Thin tannish head. Heavy body, watery with a bit of silkiness to it. Mild carbonation. Starts with a lot of acetone and ethyl acetate vapors, alcohol and sharp sweetness. Fruity. Quite a mix of chemically sharp compounds, sweet with some molasses and licorice. Good hit of bitterness in the finish, with nice bitter and sweet balances. After is dry and bitter, with estery lingering burn. Harsh, but a nice barley wine. Arayaga2 (933), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 23, 2007 Updated: Dec 20, 2008Nice dark brown with small off-white head. Aroma is very sweet and citrusy and not unlike an IIPA. Taste is a quite bitter but balanced by equally high residual sweetness, and lingering fruity notes. $5/22oz stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 23, 2007 Bottle sampled with Beerded one. Pours mohogany with a compact light tan head. Aroma of raisins, caramel malt, toffee, and hops. The flavor is caramel, fruit, citrus, and piney hops. Good brew. carl4beer (394), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA Mar 23, 2007 pours a dark amber with a nice head. has a fresh sweet grassy aroma, very not barley wine... but nice. mouth is sweet and malty with some fuityness that is overtaken with a big floral hop. way over hopped for a barley wine, but i like it. it is like a barley wine for hop heads. pleasantly different
