COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our American-style Barleywine undergoes a three hour boil to intesify the caramel malts and the enormous Pacific Northwest hop charge. The result is a rich, estery brew with toffee notes and citrus hop flavors layered throughout. Enjoy this brew fresh today or lay it down for aging to see how the flavors of each vintage evolve.

22oz bottle, no date. How can I age this to see how each vintage evolves if I don’t know the friggin’ date? Pours a clear ruby brown with a two finger slowly fading beige head. When I first popped the cap all I could smell was tangerine and pineapple--not so much like a barleywine as an IIPA (reminded me of the hopslam I had earlier today). In my glass I also was able to get some raisins, maple syrup, caramel, toffee, and some alcohol. A very hoppy barleywine so far. Flavor has extremely hopped up tangerine, pineapple, and pine with toffee, caramel, and raisins comprising the malt backbone. This is still fairly lopsided with hops and bitterness. However, English Barleywines are usually ungodly sweet, so I’m not taking sides. Dry finish with some alcohol noted. Full body, not necessarily thick though. Carbonation is soft and moderate. This seems a lot like a IIPA (as far as I’m concerned) with a darker malt backbone. Green Flash knows their hops pretty well, and look forward to trying some more of their beers.

Thanks to illinismitty for sharing this bottle with us at the Nashville Tasting! Poured dark amber with a frothy off-white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma is very hoppy for a barley with some floral and some alcohol present. The flavor found a nice mixture of hop and malts that leaves a moderate bitterness throughout. Medium to full body. Definitely an American Barley!

Thanks to Illinismitty for sharing this one at the Nashville Tasting. A mahogony pour with a gooy lacing. A light raisiny aroma. A smooth even palate with a touch of hops. Its not bad but it seemed a bit harsh to me for only 10%.

At the 2nd Annual Hell With The Lid Off Barley Wine Festival at Kelly’s Bar in East Liberty, Pittsburgh. Although this is not the typical barley wine, I quite like it. Hazy ruby, good sized off white head---unusual for a barley wine. Aroma is citrus, floral, nice hops. Flavor is hops, fruit (plum, pear, kiwi), malt, herbal.

Tap at Falling Rock, CO. BW Dain Bramage world tour! Pours a hazy ruby-amber color with a decent size dense tan colored head. Initial aroma is a blast of floral hops, followed by some sweet caramel malts, maybe some molasses. Flavor is piney, sweet malt, vanilla, alcohol, grapefruit, orange. Palate is medium to full, slightly sticky, with a dry, warming finish. I thought this was darn good.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Pours a dark reddish sepia brown with a thin beige head. Huge amounts of caramel and molasses. The bitterness is slightly off balance as it is much too pronounced in a harsh way, and not a balancing way.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2009 22oz bottle, 2006 bottle i think 2-4months old. poured a beautiful ruby with small tan head. nose is loaded with PNW hop flavor w/notes of fruit punch, grapefruit, kiwi, and piney. strangely the nose gets very muted with sharp citrus and phenols after a while. the malt also contributes dark fruits to the nose. malt profile is pretty simple and predictable, toasted malts, cookie, loads of caramel, chocolate, balanced nicely with a healthy bitterness, and piney hop flavor. mouthfeel is smooth and sticky, alcohol is well hidden at first but once my tongue got used to the hop bitterness i started tasting the sweet alcohol more. carbonation is low. this beer seems to get more messy as i drink it and the flaws eventually own up. but this is tasty on a 3degreeF night even if it’s nothing too special. sorta strange but i loved it at first, noticed lots of flaws in the middle, and finding it tasty again near the end.3.8.

11/7/08, 2 year old 22oz bottle. faded hop aroma, doughy malts, still has some vibrant carbonation but just isnt very complex. i wouldn’t age this.3.5.

Bottle from State Line. Pours turbid ruby with 2-finger off-white head. Aroma of heavy wet, piney hops, caramel malt, slight fruit and citrus. The flavor is heavily hopped, with notes of berry, caramel malt, and tangeriny citrus. Very fruity and hoppy with a rich, complex palate.
