3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2012 Tap at Blind Tiger. Pours a dark amber with a slight, white head. Nose holds plenty of booze and candied fruits. Flavor has a sweet, scathing alcohol thing going. Some notes of dark fruits and molasses as well. Medium to big body, mild carbonation, very warming. Pretty good, but I liked the bourbon barrel aged better.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at PP Carlsbad 6/12/09: Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a stringy lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel malt and a touch of brandy oak complexity. Starts with good fullness and rich brown sugar and raisin complexity with a touch of sweet toffee before a warming bittersweet light fruity and warming finish. A pretty good barleywine.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival.
Pours clear deep copper with micro thin off white head. The aroma has lots of resiny pine hop notes backed up by full wood aromatics and a bit of booze. The taste is a bit harsh with pine hops and booze followed by some rich malty sweetness. Toward the finish I get a welcomed touch of toffee. It finishes a bit dry. Overall the beer ends better than it starts. Still, tasty stuff.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Fuck yeah brandy barrel barley wine. Wonderfully rich aroma of dark fruits, vanilla, wood, brandy, smooth and sweet smelling, vinuous, some oak and hops come through. Not the best description but it smells fucking amazing. Dark brown auburn pour, reddish undertones, thin offwhite head. The flavor is an amazing blast of brandy sweetness up front, strong vinous notes, alcohol, dark fruit, big hops show up still, vanilla, residual sugars, alcohol. Wood and hops balance in the finish. Fucking smooth velvetty mouthfeel, god damn amazing beer.

Draft@ The 2009 Great Alaska Beer and Barleywine fest. 2007 version from a Heaven Hill barrel. Clear amber with a tan head. Nice caramel sweet, boozy vanilla aromas. Full bodied with light carbonation. Huge ass boozy vanilla flavor with sharp caramel and pit fruits.
Think Barleywine with a shot of booze.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Brouwer’s for Big Wood, pours a deep dark brown / red with a small beige head. Aroma of subtle brandy, caramel, a little licorice and maple syrup. Flavour is very rich with heaps of caramel / treacle, maple syrup, aged very well with brandy barrels - medium complexity for a barley wine. Enjoyable, but extremely heavy and burdening on the palate, making this a slow sipper.
