3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 23, 2010 Pours black with a quickly dissipating tan head. Nose is roasted barley and cocoa powder. Taste is very powdery, light roasted barley, mostly thin cocoa and ever so slight alcohol burn. It’s a tasty stout, but a little thin for a double.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle from Ludlow Wines, 2009 vintage. Pours an oily, opaque dark brown with a finger-thick tan head that leaves a little film and a ring around the glass’ inner edge. Aroma of roasted chocolate malts, coffee, milk chocolate candy, cream, and caramel. A little smoked wood rounds it out. The flavor disappoints, though, with some metallic, dirt, wet ash, and rust notes that detract from the chocolate and coffee base. Medium-full bodied, with a gritty mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Would be a lot better with a smoother mouthfeel and without those unwelcome notes murkying the flavor. Still good, but not as good as advertised.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (in NZ). Nearly black with a large foamy jaffa-colour head. Dark chocolate on the nose, some roasted malt and hints of raisins. A rich malty palate, plenty of sweetness. Perhaps a bit lacking in distinct flavours - any fruitiness being swamped by the alcohol and sweetness. Some aniseed does sneak in the finish. But I’m not complaining.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle in Monterey. This bottle aleviated some Green Flash fears for me (recent misses). Slick, black colour with a HUGE foamy, tan head that hangs around a long time. The aroma that sneaks out from under the head is sweet chocolate and coffee. Very full mouthfeel with more coffee, chocolate and buckets of roasted malt in the flavour. Very well done.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A jet black pour with a delicious looking two fingers of thick brown foamy goodness. Head sticks around and leaves some lace. Aroma is licorice, alcohol heat, some dark fruit. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, hop bitterness. Finishes bitter. Mouthfeel could be a little bit chewier to be a true "double stout." Excellent beer though.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle dragged from the cellar where it has been resting for some time. The pour is beautyful black with a nice fluffy brown head. Spot on. The nose is coffee and mighty burned with light hoppy notes. The taste is warm and pleasent. with a medium palate thet are smooth without beeing sticky. The balance is spot on. The burned malts along with licorice and chocolate topped with some light bitterness from hops. The finish is round with lots off coffee and bitter notes. Damn this is a good beer. Im a fan... must have more. Thanx

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured near black but no viscosity to speak of. The head was somewhere between tan and brown with spots of lacing. The aroma was mostly coffee and hops with some definite citrus coming through. The flavor was roasted malts, coffee and a touch of hops with some sweeter chocolate coming out as it opened up. Not quite medium in body. Pretty good.

Bottle (shared with Angeloregon)... Poured black with a light brown head. Dirty, earthy, dark, roasted malts on the nose. Cookie dough-like flavors with dark chocolate, oak, wood-like mulch flavors.
