4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 3, 2012 Fabulous stout! Not sure what makes it "double", but it’s certainly quadruple times better than that Fuller’s "Double" Stout. Great black colour with beautiful brown head. The right aoma of roasted malts, chocolate and a touch of hops and grapes, after all we’re in California here, aren’t we? The flavour has the right balance os caramels, chocolates and the bitters of hops. Solid and full bodied. Sweet and dry finish, yes, it IS possible. Big, Bold and Complex - they got it right!

There’s a terrible thunderstorm frantically foraging in a fraction of a glimpse. Forming in the distance offshore; last breath of life’s bliss.

Glass: Firestone pint glass
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Feb. 22, 2014
Consumed: Feb. 28, 2014
Poured an almost pitch black color with 4-to-5 fingers of tan frothy tan head. Good dose of sporadic foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Great retention.
Smelled dark chocolate, light coffee, toffee, caramel, fudge, crayon and cocoa.
Tasted cocoa, dark chocolate, crayon, roasted nuts, dark fruits and buttery bitter notes.
Full body. Thick texture. Average carbonation. Long, bitter, warming finish.
This was a very good stout. Not fantastic, but good all around.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle to half-pint glass. Looks good; a fairly opaque dark brownish black with foamy beige head. Smells of dark malt, bitter roast, and a touch of fruitiness. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Not getting much of the oats. Solid, but nothing special.

3.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
These guys pretty nailed this...old world base with the Green Flash overtones. I would say this drinks more as a porter with a rough coffee aroma and nose that finishes into a bitter hop that sticks around for a while and lacks the creamy mouthfeel and deep malt profile of a stout. Aroma is somewhat underwhelming intensity-wise but is inviting with coffee and heavily roasted malts. The malt profile on this beer is the best attribute as it has old world style balance and breadth without being overpowering. The finish is a little clumsy however with strong hop notes that are not well balanced but tasty nonetheless if you are looking for a west coast style beer. The malt profile on this beer is great, and i would strongly recommend this beer as such.
