4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 wj94 (69) - Virginia, USA - FEB 4, 2011
I haven’t written a review in forever...just had to write this one to say how amazed I was with this beer. Slap a $15/bomber price tag on this puppy with some fancy packaging and you’ve got a top-50 beer. For $10/4-pack, this beer is incredible. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, nuts, toffee (coffee and toffee in the same beer - you f***in kiddin me? america, f*** yeah!). Little bit of ash on the palate, slight dryness. Great f***in beer, put me down for a case.

Opaque black color...thick, creamy head with nice lacing. Bold malt aroma, with subtle hints of chocolate. Heavy malt flavor up front...mouthfeel is very creamy, though somewhat crisp for the style. Back is enhanced with a lingering malt sweetness. Finish has a long, robust maltiness. A very solid performance overall...the only real downside was a slight over-carbonation.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2010 Bottle. 24.5 oz. Split with Vin. Pours a solid, deep cocoa brown with a thick amberish head. Aroma of oats, lactose, brown sugar, toffe, roast, sweet malts, and light notes of pepper. Fuller bodied with a soft, clean, incredibly smooth mouthfeel. Gentle warming in the finish. This brew is insanely well balanced and poised. Excellent stout.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2010 Chocolate cake aroma. Chewy-chocolate and roastiness. Smooth and complex. Deep black with excellent head.

A: pours black, dark brown around the edges when held to a light. Head was two fingers just after pour, after a while it was a thin dark brown.
S: dark and roasty, a nice chocolaty sweetness almost reminds me of a milk stout in the aroma. It smells creamy.
T: dark roasted malt, a creamy mix of the malt, chocolate, a little nutty, oat smoothness/sweetness. There is a nice slightly piny aftertaste.
M: creamy, smooth carbonation
O: no complaints, is a great stout, wish it came in sixers and not four packs.

Grains, mild roasted malts and a hint of nuttiness in aroma. The flavor complex fruit, grains/malts and a coffee-like bitter finish. No off-flavors, this stood on its own as far ales go.

Almost black with brown creamy head. Aroma is vanilla, chocolate, peated whiskey. Taste is also vanilla and chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and hints of whiskey. Smooth, creamy texture. Awesome beer!!! Too bad I only got to taste it. Next time I’d like a whole bottle of this!

This beer pours like syrup out of the bottle. Dark and creamy with a slight brown/tan head. Plenty of lacing drapes the side of glass. This beer really looks great.
The aroma smells of brown sugar, molasses and roasted coffee and chocolate. Fair amount of alcohol on the nose.
This beer has a surprising bitter note from the hops, yet sinfully sweet.
The body is light for a stout, but its creamy texture and soft to low carbonation stand out and make this one a pleasure to take in.
This beer is self-described as big, bold & complex, and while the opposite of what I prefer in women, GFDS lives up to its billing. This is already one of my top 5 if not top 3 stouts.

Pours black, no light is getting through this beer. Large foamy brown head appears after pouring that takes a few minutes to disappear. Smells sweet, think milk chocolate and coffee, can smell some oats too. I can understand the Old Rasputin comparison. This beer is a lot heavier on the hops, something I expected from Green flash. Beer has notes of dark chocolate and dark coffee, maybe a little oats in their as well. The malt is heavy but it is completely overshadowed by the hops (not immense, but way more than I’m used to in a stout. Finishes dry and bitter with a little malt left on the palate. Not as tasty as some creative stouts I have but very solid and great for a beer drinker who would rather have beer without too many flavors. Complexity is somewhat hidden by hops. Can’t even taste the alcohol content. Worth trying.

Absolutely one of the finest brews I’ve had; almost a hybrid of a good black lager & a stout, with enough hop taste to please everyone. A+ all the way.
